Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed her homework from Monday and then went on to do another long critical reading passage. She got 4/6 questions right from her homework and all of them right on the passage we did together. The student's main issue with critical reading is that she does not like to flip back and forth between the questions and the passage. I explained to her that the format of these passages requires her to focus on different lines/words, but that she should always read a few lines above and below in order to ensure that she understands the context. In addition, we went over a few of the grammar questions. I assigned her a long two passage critical reading and the remaining grammar questions (4 of them)."
"During this session the student and I worked on both grammar and reading comprehension questions. I brought her a copy of a book that teaches the 6 different tenses a verb can take. It should help both grammar multiple choice questions as well as the essay she will write. The essay she had written was a good one. I told her to continue writing more timed essays, and to find someone to give critical feedback to her. I wrote down a list of things she should remember to do before the SAT day arrives. I believe she will do well on the exam."
"Worked on a root words/affixes activity. Identifying roots in the words and trying to guess their meaning. On the other side, she used the meanings put root words together and create a word. We talked about her essay on internet access/the digital divide, and I told her I would give her more comments later. I had her explain to me how to find words in context. She remembered some of them, and we went over the others again. She was unable to finish the packet before, so I had her do some more problems and asked her to finish the rest later. I told her she needed to study the rest of the root work list, and I gave her a short story to read and answer questions. Also, I had her finish one passage in the practice test that I gave her."
"The student and I started the session with a math review of the 20 hardest problems I could find in the practice book we are using. She completed all of them easily and in a good amount of time. We then focused on timed science strategies such as which passage to complete first, how to approach a very wordy question vs. one that merely asks you to read a graph, etc."
"Today, the student and I went over the sentence completion exercises she worked on for homework, and I was very happy to see she is using the strategy we discussed and it really seems to be working! She does a great job explaining her approach to me, which shows me that she is really focused on being deliberate and systematic with her approach, like we talked about. We also started on the passage-based reading questions of the Critical Reading SAT section and talked about strategies for different types/lengths of passages. She seemed very receptive to the new approach we were practicing and did very well with the passages we walked through together."
"Today we covered SAT sentence completion questions and math questions, specifically geometry and algebra/algebraic expression problems. Good work today on vocab; most answers were correct and knowledge of test taking strategies was evident and proved helpful to get through harder questions."
"This was the student's last session before her SAT test date, so we covered some last minute questions, specifically in the mathematics section and went over questions that the student had gotten wrong on practice tests. She also brought me a draft of her college essay that I proofread and made suggestions."
"I gave the student two practice sections of the Critical Reading and we discussed her results as well as test-taking strategies. We also focused on some of testing scenarios, a few of her wrong answers, and looked over the details of her previous admissions test results in May. We also spent some time discussing vocabulary review and reading selections to improve her score. All of the practice tests were scored and will be used as a benchmark. I left her with some vocabulary/contextual assignments for next week. No concerns otherwise"
"We worked through the first two concept chapters, as requested. We worked on all of the drills and the student's grasp on both of these sections seems to have improved. We also discussed a few questions from a practice test that he needed some clarification on. He took home the rest of Chapter 2 to finish before our next session on Saturday."
"Today we focused exclusively on essay writing. We went through 3 prompts. By the end, the student was starting to have a much better structure, using concrete examples. He still needs to work on a clear thesis statement and making sure that the argument follows the thesis statement. For practice, I had him work on another practice essay before the next session."
"This was our last session. First, we worked through the rest of the science section, two passages at a time. The student said it was very helpful to do the timed sections in chunks in order to see how her own pace would compare to the pace necessary for completion. After that, we discussed strategies for the reading section and I had her work through all the readings in the first practice test."
"We covered the Math section heavily last time, so we decided to overview the Verbal and Writing sections today. The student felt stronger with the passages and essay respectively, so for Verbal we covered vocab and sentence completions, while we looked over grammar based multiple choice in the writing section. We broke down a systematic way to approach verbal sentence completions that relies heavily on process of elimination and surrounding context, and talked through the various grammar rules that are tested."
