Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent the entire session reviewing for his quiz on Thursday about conic sections. He still has a little difficult understanding the relationship between the standard form of conic sections and their orientation and as well as the location of their foci, vertices, and axes. However, after working through several review problems, his understanding improved greatly. We made a brief table summarizing the major similarities and differences between ellipses and hyperbolas, and he is going to study this tonight."
"The student and I reviewed and worked on problems involving matrices, adding and subtracting matrices that are the same order and multiplying matrices that have the same number of columns and rows. We also reviewed and used determinants and inverse matrices."
"We worked on her homework on the area of trapezoids. She did fine on that. Towards the start of our session she mentioned a problem from her quiz today where you need to take 2 areas and either add or subtract them to get the final area of the whole shape. After we finished her homework, we worked on how to solve these types of problems. I left her with an area problem for next week."
"Today we looked over convergence tests for Taylor and Maclaurin polynomials. We also looked at how to go about differentiating and integrating power series. We reviewed examples of these methods to show how this process can simplify complex integrals."
"We spent the session focused on pre-algebra today. We got 2 lessons done, and then did 1 Core Review. He's still having issues remembering past concepts, so we'll keep working on that."
"Tonight, the student and I worked on his review for the AP Calc exam. Specifically, we worked on a composite functions and derivatives of composite functions, inflection points, and numerical approximations."
"We worked on exponentials and logarithms. This was in preparation for her exam on Wednesday. She understood most of the concepts as this was a review and we had gone over similar materials in previous weeks."
"Today I met with the student and we went through part of her homework. We discussed sequences and their convergence. We also began to discuss series, which are slightly more complicated. I look forward to meeting with her next week!"
"We covered convergence of sequences and started the infinite series material -- we went over how to calculate the sum of geometric series and telescoping series (using partial fractions), and the nth-term divergence test."
"During our session, the student and I went over parabolas, circles, ellipses and hyperbolas. We discussed how to write formulas for each, how to identify parts of each, and how to identify the formula for each."
"The student and I went over arc length in rectangular coordinates. We reviewed old materials and prepared for an exam that he had the following week. Overall the session went well and he felt confident for his test."
"We practiced working with decimals and percentages, including connections between the two. We reviewed homework questions and some extra problems from both the lesson book and those provided by the tutor."
