Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student needed help in Advanced Math 3 for a quiz the next day. We reviewed and practiced going from polar to standard form and vice-a-versa, de moivre's theorem, solving equations using trigonometric identities, and parametric equations. The student practiced these concepts until we both felt he was proficient in all topics and could answer any practice problem with ease."
"The student and I began the session with reviewing her vocab words. Since she hadn't studied them beforehand we spent a bit more time memorizing them this session. Eventually we got to do some work with parts of speech that I think will be helpful with her Writing section. We practiced making synonyms and sentences with each word as well. In our math lesson, we covered inequalities and the very beginning of order of operations. She was very strong in this, and seemed to have a good concept of what an equation means. We then went over the essay she had begun writing Tuesday, and I asked her to spend 20 minutes finishing it off, writing her three body paragraphs and a conclusion. We didn't get to do much Reading Comprehension work today, but I'll bring in more passages on Tuesday that we'll take a look at together."
"This last session with the student went fairly well. We reviewed most of the grammar concepts and also reviewed his approach when it comes to his essay. He did very well. I think he has made great improvement and shows that he is really starting to understand how to succeed in mastering English grammar."
"The student and I reviewed his grammar test. We then worked on his literature homework. We spent some time discussing folktales so that he could complete his writing assignment. Lastly, we worked on his science where I showed him how to look up answers in his book."
"We met for the first session and talked about some of the basics of chemistry, including Significant digits, unit conversions, density calculations, percent mass calculations, the period table and trends, electron configurations, and Lewis dot structures. For the most part, she has a good memory of the subjects and for the ones where she didn't, she caught on quickly when we reviewed them. She is willing to do plenty of reading in between our sessions, so I think she will be easily prepared for the test when she takes it in a couple of weeks. She did well on all the problem sets that we worked through."
"After discovering last week that the math topics on the ISEE were a little bit harder than expected, I assigned some problems on some of the topics that he needed help with. We covered the problems that he missed over the past week, and did practice sets on rates and proportions, percents, and algebra word problems."
"Met with the girls for the first time. They both had a science test coming up so we focused most of our energy there. We reviewed the different biological systems and we spoke about ways that the girls could continue to study on their own. At the end of the session I felt that both girls had a fairly good grip on the material, though some review of certain systems will be needed before their test."
"The student and I worked on multiplication and division problems. We practiced with the "chunking" method for long division. We also reviewed estimates and rounding numbers. Finally, we practice with word problems that involve multiplication and division operations."
"The student and I continued our progress through practice problem sets with growing emphasis on vocabulary as he masters the strategies we have been learning. We went over sentence completion problems 9-12 and reading comprehension passage 7, and I drilled him on vocabulary from his vocabulary flashcard set."
"I worked with the student on the SSAT. I first had her make flash cards for the math terms, mean, median, and mode, and I also had her make flashcards on strategies for computing averages and converting decimals to fractions. We then went through about 18 SSAT practice problems, and we worked through translation conflicts and clarified math concepts. Overall, it was a great session."
"The student reported that he got a B on his last Spanish test. To prepare him for a test he will have next Monday, we went over the grammar for this chapter. We worked on his homework, and when we were done, I quizzed him on grammatical concepts to ensure that he is prepared for his upcoming test."
"The student has the second part of his Acids and Bases Exam. During this session we went over his notes and did a few practice problems. We mainly focused on Ka and Kb questions, as well as questions asking for the Molarity of an unknown concentration of an acid or base given the other in a titration. He seems to have a good grasp on the material. His father tells me that the student has been doing exceptionally well in Chemistry which was great to hear. Overall this session went well."
