Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I am very pleased with the student's progress! Even though she isn't always confident in her knowledge, I'm impressed with her ability to draw connections between past tutoring sessions and statistics ideas. She knows when a hypothesis test should be two-tailed or one-tailed, when to use the t-statistic or the z-statistic, and more importantly, what the different values actually mean. This session we worked on how to calculate the power of a test, and how to reject a confidence level when the test is two-tailed (add the two probabilities). We will have review calculating the power of a test in future sessions, but she did well with the two-tailed tests."
"Today we went over proportions, including estimated mean and standard deviation formulas. We looked at a worksheet and did a few practice problems. We then reviewed binomial probability distributions, left-tailed vs right-tailed distributions, and normal curves for both populations and samples. I left some practice questions for the student that she will work on. We will go over them during the next session as well as review everything we have covered for her midterm on Tuesday."
"We covered the sample space, independent events and exclusive events. The student and I spent time to figure out how to count the possible outcomes that satisfy the problem requirement. He now has a better understanding of how to figure out the probability of events."
"Today we went over independence and mutually exclusive events in relation to probability. I made up a series of questions that was comparable to the student's in-class work and we went over the problems together using her notes from class."
"We reviewed ANOVAs and t-tests today, in preparation for Tuesday's test. The student tends to overthink problems. He desires to learn the material and do well on the test. I found a more useful visualization of the calculations used in ANOVAs, that he will use in his studies. He will practice ANOVAs and t-tests to prepare for Tuesday's test."
"The student came very prepared - she had uploaded several documents before I got to the room. We discussed probability concepts and discrete distributions and did multiple practice problems for each. We then went over Venn and tree diagrams before ending with some discussion of continuous distributions. We will meet again on Friday."
