Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was our last session before he takes the test on Sat. We worked on science, math, and English. He's got good backtracking skills for when he makes a minor error on math, which is not often, but an important skill to have. He also created an outline for an essay in which he related the prompt to a larger question, which allowed him to write about more interesting topics."
"We covered Critical Reading and Passage-Based Reading strategies and did numerous PBR flashcards to help her get a feel for how to read the passages and to increase her awareness of certain kinds of wrong answer choices which are designed to be traps for overeager or insufficiently cautious students. I asked her to do half an hour of PBR practice problems a day until our next tutoring session."
"The student and I met for a final session. He took another Math practice test. He worked more slowly than last time and checked his work. His score increased another 3 points to a 30. We also reviewed surface area and special right triangles."
"We started by talking about the assessment at a high level - general components of the test, strategies, etc. Then we went into the Reading section, and focused on section-specific strategies. We did timed-practices of 3 passages and then corrected them together, focusing on key-take always and strategies to learn. The student should continue to practice going through passages and developing an understanding of content; this is definitely the most important skill on the Reading test and working on this will help her a lot! Then, we talked about carefully reading questions and doing the easier questions within a section first, really using the text as a reference and a tool."
"We went over a full English section, which the student completed under the allotted time. We went over the first 35 or so questions of a math test, which is what she's going to continue working on between now and the test."
"Today, during our last session, I began by giving the student an information sheet I had prepared on the subject of radians and the unit circle, as this was a mathematical area which he needed to review more extensively. I explained the concepts of the radian circle, how to convert degrees to radians and vice versa, and common radian measures of angles. We then spent the remainder of the session doing additional math practice, covering any other mathematical facts he needed to cover as we came across them in problems. The student reported feeling much more confident about his approach to the assessment because of our sessions together; he said he felt he had a better understanding of what would be covered in each subject area and how to approach them. I predict his assessment score will reflect all the effort, practice, and care he has put into preparing for it, and I am confident he will see results."
"Today, we went through the student's Reading Diagnostic Test 4, going through his answers. Afterwards, we went through flashcards for English, which the student generally did well on. For next session, he will be taking a second practice test from the Real assessment prep book and sending the answer sheet for grading."
"We started by going over the science section that she did for homework. Then, we did some reading passages and decided that the best strategy for her is to read the questions before hand and to answer them as she is reading the passage. We then started on math with a diagnostic test, which we will continue with in our next session."
"We had a half hour session just to talk through any nerves, build confidence, etc. before the exam tomorrow morning. The student has done a fantastic job preparing and her last practice exam was great, so I'm confident she will do well!"
"The student's latest practice ACT showed more gains in Math and Science, bringing her composite up to 31. We did further English and Science practice today to address some of her lingering concerns, but I am confident she will do well."
"Yesterday's session went very well. The student and I went over 35 English, 30 math, 1 practice essay topic, and 2 science passages. For homework, I assigned 1 full practice test. I look forward to continuing next week after the exam and I expect great results from her!"
"We finished practicing a Math II packet. The problems were quite difficult. The student did really well. I lectured on parametric equations, linear regression, and properties and apps of trig functions. We also discussed test strategies."
