Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on order of operations, multiplication, and division today. He is a very strong math student. He worked independently, and I followed along only to make sure he was reaching the correct answer. Overall, he did a very good job of managing his time and working efficiently."
"Today, the student and I worked on her final examination review sheet. She did well with most questions. We'll do more review on similar triangles and system of equations. Following a clear explanation, she was able to effectively solve similar triangle questions. There were only two system of equation questions on her homework, which we solved together. I will bring some more questions involving system of equations next session so that she can gain more practice with this."
"The student did some practice problems before this session, so we reviewed her work to start, mostly about percents, ratios and proportions. Next we covered expressions and equations with variables. We went over addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of equations. We also learned about like terms. We covered the distributive property and rules for exponents. We did several examples from each section. The student had some troubles with multiplying by negative numbers and distributing, but she was learning quickly and gaining confidence as we did more examples."
"We covered LaGrange Multipliers and Maxima and Minima. The student has her first test this week, but has not gotten her homework back yet. I suggested that she practice with more problems to prep for the exam."
"Today the student continued to work on quadratic functions. We reviewed equations of the form y=ax^2+c briefly and then focused on equations of the form y=ax^2+bx+c. In particular, we worked on finding the vertex of those parabolas using -b/2a and then translating that into a graph of the equations. We also worked on figuring out if the vertex tells you a max or a min, and finding the fastest way to complete those problems. We also worked on the end of chapter test to figure out which areas to emphasize for next time, and her homework is to complete 5 practice problems of the type that we have already gone over and to memorize the quadratic equation so that she will be prepared to work on solving quadratic equations next time. Finally, we spent a few minutes working on synonyms/antonyms and her reading homework is to read the first few chapters of Ender's Game, making a list of any words she does not know so that we can work on expanding her vocabulary."
"We emphasized division, but ended up spending a lot of our hour on time. We went slowly through the problems and will follow up next time."
"In preparation for the student's exam tomorrow, we went over the material for the entire chapter. Major topics included: natural logarithms, the natural exponent, differentiation and integration of each function, inverse functions, inverse trigonometric functions, hyperbolic functions, and the derivatives and integrals of each of those. We'll continue to reinforce these topics in future sessions."
"During today's session, we went over the student's assessment practice test. Additionally, we covered multiplying double digit numbers. By the end of the session, the student was able to successfully multiply double digit numbers. I left the student with three worksheets. No concerns."
"Today, the student and I went over ratios, proportions, and percentages, along with continuing practice of solving algebraic equations. I left her with several practice problems for next week's meeting. She is getting much more comfortable with pre-algebra."
"Today we reviewed for the student's test tomorrow. She had a review sheet that we went over, covering various problems about graphing vertex-form equations, and converting from standard form to vertex-form. She absorbed techniques quickly, and seemed to be comfortable with the subjects that we covered."
"We covered the student's latest homework. He needs help with understanding new concepts. The root cause is mainly his fundamental understanding of algebra. I recommend that he book additional sessions, so I can help him improve his capability of solving homework problems on his own."
"Assignments from school: ordering fractions, solving problems with rational numbers, and place value review . Interactive software confirmed accuracy as student completed each problem. Also, the student was able to explain the concepts in her own words. I assigned 40 problems from her school recommended list"
