Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a shortened session on Tuesday night, picking up with the progress we'd made last time on the issue task. I'm a big believer in repetition, so we began by analyzing another sample essay that received the top possible score. She was better able to point out the strengths of the essay that corresponded to concepts we'd covered previously. I still got the sense that she has trouble switching into critical thinking mode; when we moved on to our actual writing exercises, she took a little too long in getting started. While this is normal at this stage, it's the main reason I want to keep re-iterating the analytical concepts -- so she'll default into those channels of thinking on test day. One area where the student did considerably better involved building her supporting examples. Using a sample prompt, she manufactured a mock thesis statement and opening paragraph that was very strong, then assured me she'd work on the rest over the course of the next week. We intend to have a finished product to build on for the issue task for our next session -- which, by the way, will likely not occur for a couple weeks, as the student wants to start focusing more on math. But I'm confident that when we do re-convene, we'll have a student-made resource that will gauge progress and serve as a useful tool moving forward."
"The student feels good about the Writing part of the test, so we focused on math today, going through the diagnostic test and reviewing strategies/content."
"Today we drilled solving for x, the symbols for inequalities, and box-and-whisker plots. The student has improved significantly over the last few months."
