Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked on the reading from last session, and used the same strategies. He focused on using context to help figure out the meaning of unknown words. Finally, he worked on revising a paragraph he'd begun in a previous session. He added details and rearranged a pair of sentences in order to produce a well-developed, cogent paragraph."
"Today we worked on a grammar sentence writing worksheet. Discussed and defined prepositions and the student worked on some exercises. We briefly discussed modifiers and then the student did a modifier diagnostic text. Today's focus was on sentence structure, prepositions, modifiers, for clear and concise sentences."
"The student and I went over one of her previous language arts essays. We worked on tense consistency, appositive comma use, general comma use. The student has a good grasp of writing, and we will work on grammar and practice writing prompts for our next class. I will be emailing her mother with a few writing prompts for the student to answer before our next session."
"This evening I had the student read a short story I downloaded. It was at a low 5th grade level, which was an easy read for him, but I wanted to focus on question answering skills. The main skill we worked on was to go back into the text to find the answer, first, and highlight it. That way, he was able to better formulate his answer and use the text to help him spell all the words he needed. He did an excellent job answering the questions. Next, we worked on grammar and word skills. I helped him understand the correct way to punctuate dialogue and explained the meanings of the words synonym and antonym. Finally, we looked up the meanings of several of his spelling list words."
"During this session, we reviewed two past essays and the student worked on a Global Studies essay. She and I worked on outlining an essay, details in the paragraphs, a strong thesis statement, and a strong introduction and conclusion."
"The student has improved significantly in his ability to identify and fix problems with sentence structure and punctuation, as well as paragraph development. We worked on the same chapter of his thesis that we reviewed last week and made important improvements. The paper is taking shape as a highly readable and convincing piece of scholarship. Next week, we'll go over corrections and additions to the chapter we covered tonight and begin work on a new chapter."
