Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began the session with test corrections. The student is strongest with improving sentences and improving paragraph questions. The student has improved with sentence completion questions especially. We ended up focusing our session on Critical Reading and Writing simply because test corrections for CR were extensive. Correcting writing MC was fairly quick because for the majority of the questions, the student was able to correct herself after rereading the sentences. For next time, I instructed her to time herself and see how long she takes as opposed to adhering to a time limit."
"This was my first session with the student though I had talked to her and her father previously on the phone. She is very bright and motivated. She is well into the 700s on the SAT except for her critical reading section, which is in the high 600s. She wants to move it up at least into the mid 700s, and she is completely capable of doing so. Her homework is to work on the more difficult passages slowly and without regard for time, one at a time with breaks in between, 1/2 hour to an hour a day. I assigned one essay for her to look at and suggested Gladwell's "Blink." Next time I will look at some of the essays she has written and go over the work she did during the week."
"We reviewed the writing tips we went over during our last session. We then focused primarily on mathematics. We reviewed geometry concepts including geometry symbols, angles, triangles, parallelograms, polygons, etc. We also reviewed data analysis, statistics, and probability, covering such topics as graphs, mean, median, and mode, and dependent and independent variables. I had the student do some practice problems, and went over them with him. He did a good job overall. I left the student with a math practice section, a reading section, and asked him to rewrite his essay. Of course, he also has his vocabulary flashcards that he will be working on."
