Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed FOILing and factoring when the leading coefficient is 1. We began factoring when the leading coefficient is not 1. We also completed Physics problems that combined the use of new (force, mass, acceleration) and old (velocity, distance, gravity) equations."
"Solution of simultaneous linear equations using matrix operations, simplifying logarithms using their properties, relation between equations, their solution sets, and their graphs, factoring difference of cubes, and using the special case of the rational roots theorem in which the leading coefficient is 1. This latter subject needs more comprehensive treatment in our next session."
"The student did an awesome job today. We talked about physics and algebra II. In algebra II, we discussed absolute value where he had to graph and solve the absolute value equation. We also talked about systems of equations. In physics we began chapter 2 on motion. I also showed him some basic study habits as well."
"The student is really improving! His vocab continues to improve and so do his practice scores. We talked about taking a full PSAT practice test with time limits every week until the test, and if he devotes his full attention to practice he will score well on test day."
"The student had received comments from his teacher on the first draft of his paper. We worked through some of the larger revisions that the essay needed. On the whole, I helped him work to be more specific in his word choice and more thorough in his explanations and general statements."
"I think the student is doing really well. The reading seems to be getting easier for her and she is improving in the grammar. I really want to focus on the math because she has the greatest room for improvement there. I've asked her to do drill work tonight for homework because she really needs to work on her efficiency in completing easier problems."
"Reviewed Newton's law of motion and free body diagrams for the student's physics test on Thursday. This included how to calculate friction, the normal force, and the concept that the sum of the forces equals mass times acceleration."
"Covered various topics related to the IB testing coming up: reviewed conditional probability and introduced combinatorial probability. Began review of series, specifically the types of problems that will be on the exam, and also covered derivative rules. Lastly, demonstrated some algebraic techniques for solving equations."
"The student did really well with his assigned homework and test prep for an exam on Friday. We reviewed his previous test and identified potentially bad test-taking habits. I think he should do better on this exam than the last as many of the questions he missed were due to simple mistakes as a result of not checking his work."
"Reviewed for the student's exam on momentum: went over impulse forces and changes in momentum, focusing on conceptual ideas. Seems like she is in good shape for her exam, and just needed a little review of the trickier concepts."
"The student and I reviewed sample questions for the entry exam. We worked on test taking strategy on synonym questions, fill-in-the-blank and reading comprehension. We also worked on one essay and were able to go through the entire process of brainstorming, outlining, writing and reviewing. She needs some work on building her vocabulary, so I also had her make a list of every unfamiliar word we came across. Next week, I will quiz her on those words, do more practice questions, and work on another essay."
"The student and I covered introductory Algebra topics, such as Factoring (F.O.I.L.), exponents, polynomials, and graphing. The conceptual understanding seems to be what he will need work with. I think when he knows the steps, he can figure out how to solve the problem, it's just a matter of having him realize the proper step(s) involved. We discussed using problems online as a way of gauging problem areas and think with work, he will be very capable of doing well."
