Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered trigonometric concepts in our first session together. We discussed angles in standard positions and converting angle measurements from degrees to radians and vice versa. Subsequently, we reviewed the main trigonometric ratios, applied them to different angles, and, with the aid of a graphing calculator, previewed the graphs of this trigonometric functions. I left him with my notes and instructed him to review and commit to memory the values of trigonometric functions at key angles.
The student and I agreed to meet again next Wednesday."
The student and I agreed to meet again next Wednesday."
"In this session we focused on trigonometric/periodic functions. I saw that she improved on her previous exam! After covering the basics of periodic functions, the unit circle, and arc length (deriving the relationships between linear velocity, angular velocity, radians, arc length and sector area), we made sure to cover a variety of application word problems."
"Today we were working on law of sines and law of cosines. She needed help understanding about the sides and the corresponding angles and which part of the triangle went with the parts of the formulas. It took a lot of practice and reexplaining but she got it in the end."
"The student and I began reviewed more trigonometry. We covered law of cosines, Hero's formula and law of sines. We went over several problems covering these concepts as well as a few word problems that mixed combined multiple concepts. The student understood these chapters and is well prepared for her quiz this week."
"The student and I worked through a homework assignment on graphing sine and cosine equations. This included changes in amplitude, period, reflections, horizontal shifts, and vertical shifts. She is doing much better than when we first started."
"We reviewed some of the algebraic components in their midterm packet. Their questions revolved around log functions, abs values, and factoring. We then worked on graphing trig functions. This is a VERY difficult concept. The first student seems to have a hang on it but the second student needs some more practice after reviewing the needs for graphing."
"We covered logs and exponents as algebraic and graphical expressions. We discussed the domain and range of each function. We also solved for exact values. We learned how to simplify log expressions by using log rules, logging both sides, and using the definition of a log. The student is doing quite well. We will continue on Wednesday."
"We covered trigonometric identities and how to solve trigonometric equations. Furthermore, we did proofs. I let the student look at and memorize the first quadrant of the unit circle and told him to memorize quadratic formula."
"We looked ahead to the coming sections on the number e and logarithms. The student did really well and told me the sections were easy. I encouraged him to take advantage of these easy sections and score well on the test. Good session!"
"We covered the basics of trigonometric functions, unit circles and reciprocal identities. I emailed the student two review sheets on these concepts, which we went over systematically. After reviewing the material we did some practice and homework problems. She felt much better with the material and she said that she feels much more motivated now that she understands the concepts. Our tutoring sessions will give her much more structure to help keep her organized and stay on top of her work. At the end of the session we also talked about study skills. I gave her tips on how to take notes and suggested that she try to explain the various concepts out loud such that a person with no prior exposure to the material could understand it. Overall, I have no concerns from this session."
"In our first session, the student and I covered sections that would be on his exam, specifically covering complex numbers, solving quadratic equations and graphing those, and also working with higher order polynomials. I left him to finish his test and review sections for our next session."
"We covered specifically inverse functions, domains, composite functions of inverse functions, trigonometric graphing (cos and sin). I did not see scores to note progress. The student was struggling mostly with the function operations like taking the inverse and finding the composite of two functions. When we graphed the cosine and sine, most of the issues were with phase shifts and using the critical values, which the above mentioned and these issues should be resolved now. I left the student with extra practice on even/odd function program making."
