Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I read from the online curriculum and prepared for tomorrow's spelling test. We corrected homework from earlier in the week and wrote a letter requesting extra credit from his teacher. The student's reading is improving significantly."
"Had the student work on writing prompt, then reviewed problematic question types from math portion. Afterward, we reviewed his writing sample and worked together on ways to better organize his thoughts, make it crisper, and work from where he is (about a 2 or 3) to a 4 grade for ISAT standards."
"Today we worked on establishing an outline for the next case study, and identifying sources for research. In addition we worked on the PowerPoint for the group presentation, and reviewed the paper due this week for consistency and flow."
"Covered various topics in grammar in order for the student to better prepare for an upcoming test. Student stated that the session was very helpful, and I am already scheduled for another appointment tomorrow."
"The student completed his rough draft of Essay A, so we proofread that and added some content so that its flow was organized. We wrote a first draft of Essay B, which will need his input added after he does some research about the specific university programs and organizations he is interested in pursuing. For homework, he is going to write a rough draft for the longer Essay C. We hope to have everything written and completed during Monday's session."
"Went over results from homework practice test. Had some lessons prepared on math tips and tricks and rules of thumb. Also had some targeted problems for us to go over that focus on problems she usually omits."
"The student and I worked on reading comprehension today. We continued using the book from last time, focusing on characterization and plot sequence. We made a timeline to illustrate the plot sequence. We also practiced spelling, using words from the last week and defining new ones for this week."
"The student has started logarithms. He only sort of understood the concept initially, so we spent some time going over it. After he got logarithms and understood the properties a bit better, he was able to apply the concepts pretty well by himself."
"The student completed two timed reading sections. She struggled a bit with the longer passages; this is something we will continue to work on in future sessions. We also used a tablet app to study vocabulary. The student knew some of the words and was unfamiliar with others. I think it was a good way to refresh her memory. We will continue to work on vocabulary using the books and the apps."
"Passage reading strategies were discussed and the few errors in critical reading were identified as vocabulary differences and were solved. Set theory and foreign functions were reviewed in mathematics, along with other sample problems. Elimination and random number substitution hints were also taught as mathematics multiple choice strategies."
"In this session, the student and I went over two practice essays that he wrote for the writing section of the test. We went over these essays collaboratively and I edited them both for grammar and for content. We discussed how several sample essay criteria applied (or didn't apply) to the essays that he wrote. We also went over a practice English test that came from a book that we had not used in the past. This featured significantly more difficult questions but with some extra time we persevered through this."
" Today we worked on the students math homework, which was again focused on area and perimeter. He also begin to doing factoring trees identifying prime numbers. He was good at both of these concepts. He did pretty well over all though, on the problems we worked on together."
