Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on homework problems covering light wavelength, frequency, and energy relationships. Once the equations are set up, the math was easy for him, but he still needs some practice with recognizing which Greek letters stand for each - he said he would be practicing this in class the next day, but I will also create some additional problems for extra practice."
"During our weekly session, we went through the same exercises in math, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. The student worked diligently. I get the impression that he really enjoys our sessions and works as hard as he can."
"To prepare for the student's quiz over basic indefinite integration on Friday we completed the practice problems over trigonometric anti-derivatives before moving on to his quiz review sheet. The review sheet also asked him to find particular solutions which neither the practice set nor the in-class lesson had covered, so I taught him how to determine particular constants of integration, which he found relatively simple."
"The student and I got started on content for her next unit, which is thermochemistry (a tricky one!). I introduced concepts such as heat transfer, conservation of energy, enthalpy, the difference between temperature and heat, etc. She has been doing very well on her recent tests and homework assignments."
"The student and I devoted this session to reviewing his answers on a preliminary entrance exam practice test that he had taken before he started tutoring sessions with me. We mainly focused on the reading section, with special attention paid to questions that he responded to incorrectly. This included fill-in-the-blank sentences and also questions on short passages. We also discussed test-taking strategies for the reading section, with a particular focus on how best to allocate one's time given the different types of questions that might appear and the volume of those questions."
"This was my first session with the student. She was working on an Algebra 2 test review. I helped her solve various simplification of polynomials problems. We also worked on finding asymptotes, domain, and range of various polynomials. We also worked on manipulating problems that had 3rd or higher roots. The session went well. "
"I started covering fractions with the student. We covered how to use prime factorization to reduce fractions. We also went over adding and subtracting fractions. Lastly, we worked on go between mixed numbers and improper fractions."
"The student and I went over a variety of topics including chemistry, math, and some art. We worked on his organization skills as well as his plan for the week. I will be seeing him next on Saturday at 11 a.m. and will be reviewing and previewing topics then."
"The student and I edited his final research paper. We were also able to get his science packet started. We discussed using the internet as a source to complete his homework."
"We began with vocabulary, including reviewing mnemonics from previous sessions. In the past we've focused mostly on definitions, but today I asked the student to write sentences using his new vocabulary words ("menace" and "precaution"), through which we reviewed parts of speech at length: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and how they relate in a sentence. We also began discussing adverbs and will continue next session. The student's teacher said that his Language Arts class is beginning with parts of speech, so our continued review will be helpful for him as he encounters the same material in class."
"The student had another fine essay for me to review, and he prepared for his science quiz. We also looked at a computer project that he's working on. He is much more organized, and just as important, he's up-to-date with his assignments!"
"The student and I worked on his Finance review. Topics covered included: calls, puts, maintenance margin, initial margin, senior bondholders, junior bondholders, butterfly spreads, and bullish and bearish spreads."
