Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I prepared for her Physics final today. First, we went through the formula sheet she would be given for the test and talked about the types of problems for which she would use each equation. Then, we worked through notes she had taken on her old tests, including multiple choice, short answer, and calculation questions. We didn't get through all the material, but we made it through the most important sections, which were the ones at the beginning that she didn't recall as easily. This included uniform circular motion, gravitation, fluid flow, pressure, buoyancy, and some heat transfer. I think she will do very well on her exam tomorrow."
"Spent the first half of the session working on vocabulary with the student. I am having him give me definitions and sentences for each unfamiliar word. After that I timed him on a reading test. He did pretty well. If he goes back and checks his answers than he can get them right 90% of the time. Next time we meet I will work with him on writing within the time limit."
"Physics: started reviewing mechanics topics. One-Dimensional Motion: displacement, velocity, acceleration, graphs, formulas. Two-Dimensional Motion: vectors, vector addition/subtraction, resolving vectors."
"We went through one of the practice tests in the SAT study guide and tried to apply strategies for different types of questions. With math sections the main approach is to figure out what the question is really asking. Her set up for the problems is usually really good, but sometimes she stops answering the question halfway through. In the language sections, most of the issues are with the critical reading questions. We've been looking at putting questions about short passages into context, as many of them are related to the tone of the excerpt."
"The student and I worked on Arithmetic, Algebra, Sentence Completions and Error IDs. He is very strong in grammar and critical reading. Planning to move methodically through the math topics to refresh his memory while teaching him techniques for the SAT. Will work on pacing and determining which questions to attempt."
"Worked on reading comprehension strategies. Since he was having difficulties eliminating answer choices, I complied a few strategies that he can use when reading and answering the questions. He did show some improvement on the few problems he worked. We will continue to work on the problems to gain confidence in this section. Quantitative reasoning: worked sample problems from the sample test from the entry exam practice book."
"The student and I worked on theses series functions and exponential decay equations. We worked on a current homework assignment and went over a previous quiz. The student topics were simple algebraic equation solving, simpler series functions and graphing."
"We spent a couple minutes talking about how the student felt about the SAT. She and I went over the sections covered on the ACT, and she feels that she may do better on the ACT because she really enjoys the Science section. We then spent about a hour and 15 minutes going over a practice ACT Science Section. Overall, she did very well on the practice Science ACT section."
"This was our first session with the student and we covered various math topics. We focused mostly on word translation problems. We worked with basic algebra word problems, problems on rate, work, and distance. We also worked with problems with combinatorics and questions that involve factorials."
"Today, the students and I prepared for their physics test on the conservation of mechanical energy. We first discussed the general concept behind the topic and the related formulas. Afterward, we worked practice problems from the textbook. They found the problems to be very easy. I believe they will perform well on their exam."
"We covered fractions and decimals. Tomorrow, after a quick review of today's work, we will cover percentages and work on essays. I hope to be able to spend Thursday and Friday primarily on review."
"Focused on the math, vocab, and a little bit of the grammar section of the sat. I think the student is in a good place and with some hard work she will be ready for Saturday. I tried to leave her with a sense if confidence. I was never worried about her timing, it always seems fine to me."
