"The student and I met for the first time at her school. I spent most of the time trying to determine what, if any, mathematics would turn up on the exam that she had not seen before. I was able to teach her combinatorics (or at least the choose function) for the first time, but in general, she has a firm grasp of all the material that's likely to appear on the exam. We intend to meet again Saturday with some worked problems to see where she is prone to make mistakes (i.e. what types of problems are more difficult for her) so that I can suggest methods for avoiding those mistakes, and also so that she becomes familiar with those types of problems."
" - First meeting, 1/8 - Student wants to focus only on Math. - Scored a 590 on PSAT and in Algebra II/Trig. - Solid Math student - scoring over 700 is a possibility. - We went over PSAT Math and PR Math section, specifically complex areas and graphs. - Assigned Math sections from Test 1 for Sat."
"While we typically devote our sessions to calculus, they have covered limited material in class with the break and snow days, and so yet again our focus was on SAT preparation. I had previously assigned the student sections on which to work, so we began with test corrections. She did incredibly well on both the CR and writing sections, getting one wrong on the writing multiple choice. With math, however, she struggled with the free response questions. Test corrections were fairly quick though because she quickly realized the proper course of action with limited prompting simply upon rereading the questions. She had mentioned that she did not take the full time, rather stopped when she finished the questions. I thus emphasized the importance of checking your work with the remaining time. She expressed concern over her vocabulary skills, and so we went through common roots and completed the same exercise I have my students do in which we mention a root, they come up with examples, and then they attempt to surmise the meaning of the root. She did well with the exercise. Finally, she remembered she had a few questions regarding new material, and so I cleared up a few misconceptions. I assigned her SAT practice sections to complete for our session this Saturday."
