Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has an exam next week, so we worked on the first half of the review sheet from his teacher. The problems were all about factoring, zeroes, synthetic and long division of functions, and graph estimations. He has a very strong grasp on all the concepts needed, and plowed on through handily, with only occasional road bumps that were quickly surmounted. We left the second half of the review sheet for our session this Sunday."
"Today we covered adding and subtracting rational expressions, as well as solving equations with rational expressions. We completed the student's homework assignment on this topic. He understands it very well and his algebra skills have definitely improved over this last week. We also practiced simplifying radicals with cube roots instead of square roots."
"The student and I went over convergence tests again. We covered the integral test, geometric series test, root test, ratio test, limit comparison test and pseries test. I emphasized the conditions for which each test applied and which situations each test is appropriate. He seemed to have a good understanding of what we went over, but the material is best understood with practice so we will do examples next session."
"Today was our last session. We did an overview of trig identities that will be used in algebra 2. We started by going over reference angles and converting between degrees and radians since it was a while since we last reviewed those. Then we went over the reciprocal identities and the relationships between all the trig rules. Other things we covered were the double and half angle identities and the sum to product identities. She caught on to these concepts quickly."
"I helped her understand imaginary numbers and solving equations with imaginary numbers using the a+bi model. We discussed negative signs, multiplying each term, and simplifying the answer. She has sufficient practice to work on from her class."
"During this session, the student told me about his needs. He shared with me that they just started working on long and synthetic division. I encouraged him to find out from the teacher about the next material he/she will cover and study it proactively at home. I showed him how to properly carry out long division and we solved multiple problems. He took the lead and showed he can very comfortably do it on his own. We recalled some identities of multiplying two first order polynomials, we talked about solving a polynomial set equal to zero, we went over the process of solving a quadratic equation and we reviewed the graphs (parabolas and their properties). I left him with a set of 3 to 4 problems to solve on his own."
"The student and I we went over his last test. I gave him recommendations and we worked ahead on the next chapter, polynomials, factoring, greatest common factor and least common multiple."
"On Friday we went over the student's homework covering data transformations. Specifically his homework dealt with linear regression, power transformations, logistic transformation, word problem format, and interpretation of these different types of transformations. He should be getting his test back soon and I'd anticipate a good grade. His next test is actually coming up soon too. This is only a test on about two weeks of material and he's pretty much got the first half of it down already."
"We covered specific problems that he will encounter on his test on Monday and Tuesday (Ex: Quadratic equations, vertex form, finding xintercepts and yintercepts from the quadratic equations, etc.). Overall, the session was great."
"The student and I went over implicit differentiation which is the subject of his upcoming quiz. The student demonstrates a strong understanding of the material."
"We covered more ratios today, especially scaling in charts and doublenumberlines. We also reviewed other operations previously covered. By the time I left, she was able to explain to me clearly the correct operation for any type of problem in the Unit 5 skills practice."
"Continued test review, for upcoming second part. Reviewed factoring problems assigned last session, and reviewed problems from test review worksheet. Second half of session focused on proofs of algebraic properties."
