Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I read through the essay I had given her to do last time and we talked about the good aspects and the areas for improvement. Then she did a few practice math problems. We then moved on to critical reading. We walked through the strategies suggested in the book for the sentence completion and paragraph based reading questions. We did practice problems after each strategy and then took the practice tests at the end of the sections. I gave her some vocab words, another essay topic, and a question to work on for next time."
"The student is ready. As he concluded with me, he just needs to bring his A game next Saturday. I'm very confident in his ability to get the type of score he wants, and think that he's doing tremendously well preparing himself."
"We reviewed a practice test the student had taken out of his book, and he then completed another passage-based reading section. We then worked on the passage types that were most difficult for him, including vocabulary in context and determining an author's meaning."
"The student continues to progress much faster than the average student, aided by the fact that he has already covered most of the concepts on the SAT in his classes. Today we finished reviewing the writing multiple choice (sentence correction and error ID) and critical reading (passage response, including questions referring to multiple passages) sections. Then, we continued reviewing geometry, ending with a review of basic coordinate geometry."
"The student and I did some SAT math practice together. She first had some questions that she wanted me to go over with her, so we did those first and then we did some more from her test prep book. I told her to study more from the one SAT prep book more than the other one she was using as the one is more representative of the questions that would appear on the actual SAT exam. We plan to meet next Monday and do an overview of the SAT and go over strategies for each section."
"We covered a strategy for approaching the passages portion of the Critical Reading section. We subsequently applied the strategy to a few practice passages. I have no concerns at this time; it's a new strategy, so may take a few rounds of practice to see progress when applied. I left him with the option to apply the strategy to more practice passages."
"I gave the student some tips on each of the three kinds of sections on the SAT. First, we discussed essay writing, then reading and math. After this, I had him do a writing section from a practice test as well as a math section. After he completed these sections we discussed them and I showed him how to solve the problems he got incorrect."
"Reviewed vocab words and roots. The student was quick in responding to quizzing about roots. Assigned 5 more words and 5 more roots. Debriefed about timed Critical Reading section we had done last session. Took and debriefed about another Reading section. The student tends to miss questions with difficult vocab and ones based on non-fiction passages. However, we are working on building vocab, and she does exceptionally well with fiction passages."
"I started off by evaluating the student's performance on practice sections that he had done for today. I then proceeded to review the math section, which he says is his strongest section. We worked through two math sections and I identified areas of weakness and gave additional practice during the session. For next time, I told him to do a math section and a writing section, and also to make flash cards for vocabulary."
"Today the student continued work on the official SAT practice test. His Math scores, both for homework and during today's session, were a bit lower than they have been, and we calculated his overall Math score to be a 630. Even though Writing has not been a focus of our tutoring sessions, he is earning strong scores on his Writing practice sessions. During today's session, he also completed a Critical Reading section, in which he showed great improvement in the sentence completions section - which has been a continuous challenge. He will finish the remaining 2 sections before Friday's tutoring session, the last before his SAT next Saturday."
"For this lesson, the student and I continued to build on her math and grammar skills as well as practicing sentence completions and reading comprehension. She is doing very well on the passages and is continuing to build her vocabulary. For the grammar, she is remembering more and more, just needs to work on the timing. Math is coming along, her basic skills are great."
"We covered section 2 of the book diagnostic, doing the sentence completion. She was getting a lot more of them correct. We also covered the sentence completions section out of the book with all of the practice questions at the end of the section. Also, we covered the three hundred most commonly tested words and she created a "quizlet" on her laptop for all of the words. She has extra vocabulary practice. Her diagnostic came in in the high 1300s."
