Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We gave each other an introduction and I asked about her classes and how she felt about them. Generally, I got an educational background from her. Then we worked on different types of fractions and the following day I sent her mother a practice test."
"For our second session working together, the student's homework was a review of factoring polynomials. From the beginning I showed her how typical factoring of polynomials can be set up: (x )(x ). When polynomials begin with x^2, usually this is how you start out solving the problem, and then you use the last digit in the polynomial (such as 48) and break it down into it's factors (such as 2 and 24, 4 and 12, 6 and 8). Then, you also look at the middle number given in the polynomial to determine which pair of factors, when added or subtracted, can give you that number. Although difficult to describe in text, she and I practiced it repeatedly and she quickly re-grasped the concept she had already learned in prior math classes. Again, it was another wonderful session with her!"
"The student and I finished up the derivatives chapter today. I introduced both the logarithm and exponential derivatives. We spent a lot of the time going back over and reviewing everything we have learned up to this point. We reviewed all of the derivative rules and how to use them, as well as the limit rules and continuity. For our next session we will begin the next chapter, which is about the MVT and other extreme values of a function."
"1. Reviewed SAT sectional format and supplied detailed descriptions of all question types that comprise the revised SAT 2. The student was informed of materials to be covered in the coming sessions via a tabulated schedule of past and future sessions in order to help student self-manage and keep track of her progress 3. Covered general test-taking strategies to be revisited in future sessions 4. Reviewed Numbers and Operations section generated Quantitative review material and performed formative assessments of the student's understanding of materials covered. She is approaching proficiency in the topics covered 5. Supplied the student with 2 lists of vocabulary words (77/list) and Analytical writing prompts to prepare for next session 6. Supplied the student with homework in Numbers and Operations to reinforce material covered during the review"
"In our penultimate session, we continued reviewing the practice test that the student completed a couple weeks back. The practice questions have helped significantly and he is now doing much better on reading comp and math. He has especially made considerable gains in synonyms. I gave him some more work to do prior to our last session but he is looking pretty good prior to the exam in a few weeks."
