Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had two pop-quizzes in school today. He felt that he did well on both of them as they were a review of materials he had been covering in class and reviewing in sessions. The quizzes were in math and science. We reviewed algebra. He did well on all of the review material, but we will continue to work on remembering positive and negatives in equations. We closed the session with reading comprehension. Once again we focused on imagery and metaphor. Although he finds metaphor closer to hyperbole, he does well at understanding the meaning. I've asked him to bring his notes from class to sessions on days he is not assigned homework so that he may be better prepared for pop-quizzes."
"The student and I discussed the classes that he sat in on when he made two school visits this last week, and had a good discussion about reasons that he liked certain things and disliked others. We then went over his homework for the week. We finished by doing some writing prompts from his writing book. His writing is definitely improving, and he is offering less "passive resistance" to the idea of writing his ideas down instead of just saying them. He is a talented writer and has a funny and unique voice, and further encouragement to engage this medium will only help him improve."
"The student had very little homework tonight and no exams to prepare for. He completed a page of math, (area of Triangles) in a matter of minutes, and then we discussed 'Flowers For Algernon.' He had completed a study guide on this book and felt confident that he knew the material. We talked about the book at length so that I could determine his level of comprehension. I determined that he understands the facts of the story, which was his stated goal. Later, we went through his school binder, cleaned out the old work and organized his current work."
"Today we continued working on reading comprehension. The student read a few grade-level passages and then answered questions, which were based off of state standards. He did a great job with answering the questions, especially on ones that focused on intent. Additionally, he critically analyzed the two passages during our discussion."
"Today we worked on the final summer reading assignment. The student worked hard to finish the last book by this evening. He was able to complete the entire worksheet, including character descriptions, conflict, resolution, and plot development. We also strategized about how he would like to set up his school supplies (binders/ folders/ dividers) for the upcoming year."
"We covered kinematics focusing on displacement, distance, velocity and speed using examples in one dimension. We also began working problems involving constant acceleration. I suggested the student email me to create a login to my site so she could work some practice exercises with linear acceleration."
