Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today' session, we discussed quadratics, their graphs, and their solutions. We also reviewed higher-order polynomials and their graphs, as well as polynomial division."
"Today was my first session with the student. We talked about what her goals are moving forward. She never completed the second semester of pre-calculus in high school. She would like to take calculus in the fall, but needs to pass a pre-calc assessment before they will allow her to do this. Our goal is to prepare her for the pre-calc assessment. The test is at the end of September which gives us about 2.5 months to get her up to speed. The session was a mix of me assessing her abilities mixed with some tutoring. She didn't have a preference as to what she wanted to do first. So, I decided to start with teaching her how to construct and use the unit circle. I taught her a very quick and easy method for setting it up. I then gave her some problems to instruct her on how and when to use it. I then showed her how to convert all of the degree values into radians. We converted 3 or 4 values. Part of her assignment for next week will be to complete all the conversions. I then introduced her to the trigonometric identities. She seems to have some recollection on how to do these, but she is a little rusty. We practiced several of these problems. I asked to finish all the odd numbered problems for next week. Finally, we practiced translations and dilations (moving, shrinking, stretching a function). Again, she was familiar with these concepts, but the review helped. She was getting better as we went along. She has some familiarity with pre-calc and she has a good math intuition. She was very bright, responded well to direction, and picked up on things quickly. Most importantly, she sticks with problems. Even on the ones she wasn't sure about, I could feel her fighting to figure it out. She's got a good attitude and it seems as though she really wants to attack these problems."
"During this session I gave the student an overview of what to expect in pre-calculus. He seemed to recognize a lot of the topics. We found out the book he is required to use and will be working from there. Overall this was a good session"
"This was our first formal session. The student is working on probability - she did not have a very clear understanding of the material and how to approach/solve each problem. However, once we did a quick lesson and I explained the meaning behind the equations, she grasped the concept much better. She was able to walk me through the solutions of problems and explain why she was making the decisions she was along the way. Her test on the subject matter is due by next Friday - we are meeting again next Wednesday to firm up her knowledge of the material."
"We went over imaginary and complex numbers, including performing basic operations with complex numbers, simplifying complex numbers into standard form, and powers of imaginary numbers. We went through an assortment of example problems. The student picked up the concepts very quickly, and was able to take the lead in solving the problems very early on in the session. She also noted that she felt she had done well on the physics test that she had taken earlier this week, so I was excited to hear about that. We will be studying and preparing for her precalculus test next Tuesday evening."
"The student has finals week coming up in two weeks and he has needed extra practice on some problems for his physics and precalculus classes. Today we made use of the practice problems tab and completed some practice problems from the database in probability, physics (work and energy), and an intro to calculus concepts to aid in math and physics problems."
