Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent about half an hour working on a practice ACT writing section. I gave her some general essay-writing tips. I also explained how the writing portion is graded and discussed the rubric with her. We spent the rest of our time together working on reading comprehension."
"We worked on multiple ACT problems including Math and Science and discussed ways to approach problems in the test. I also worked with the student on multiple Science passages and discussed ways to make efficient attempts."
"The student and I worked through the first practice test in his workbook. Overall, he demonstrates a strong understanding of mathematical concepts. With practice and studying, I am confident he will be able to score at or above the 30 threshold on this particular section of the exam."
"We took a final practice test and reviewed testing strategies. We also reviewed complete sentences, when to use a colon, and checking for subject-verb agreement."
"We spent most of our time working on the math section. The student has previously struggled with problems dealing with geometry, fractions, and exponents, and she has improved in all of these areas. We also discussed study strategies for further vocabulary building for the reading section."
"We reviewed English practice tests, an essay, and I gave the student a vocabulary quiz based on her vocabulary log. She then took an English and reading diagnostic test, and we identified syntax and drawing inference from humanities passages as two key areas to focus on in the brief time before she takes the test."
"The student has made definite improvement. During several sections she didn't miss a single sentence completion. Also in the reading passages, if she misses a question she generally has the right answer as her second choice. As for writing multiple choice, she is doing quite well."
"Today we covered more of the math section and went over some concepts concerning functions that seemed a little unclear. I left the student to review the problems that required translating word problems to written expressions/functions. I plan to review these further tomorrow when we have our final review session as well as review all of the section strategies we've discussed."
"The student took a writing section practice test, which we scored and reviewed it closely. I Introduced the student to the elements of style and advised that he read and study the 1st chapter. I assigned a critical reading practice section for homework to be scored by the student for review next session."
"I worked with the student on her practice test. We went over the problems she missed and talked about the different ways that she could avoid falling into the same traps. We also spent some time discussing general test taking tips and some things to remember when writing her essay. As long as she doesn't get nervous or start to worry too much about the time, she should do fine on her test."
"In our session, the student and I did a comprehensive writing workshop. We talked about writing the essay and I started by having her plan (outline) several different prompts. I then had her write a complete (timed) essay. She wrote a very good, detailed essay. She also completed several problems in the writing multiple-choice section of a practice test. She did very well in this section."
"My first session with the student went well. She immediately identified math as her biggest struggle, so we worked through an entire math section in her prep book. I definitely noticed that she has trouble with basic math operations, a problem which then negatively impacts her ability to work algebraic problems quickly. She also seems to get a bit overwhelmed with geometry. She is a very sweet girl and is not afraid to ask me to rephrase things - which is great! I think that the holes in her math knowledge allow us a great opportunity to make (relatively) quick, measured progress. I have assigned her 3 timed practice test sections to take before our next session, just to give me an idea of how she performs across the various subjects under pressure. I will also be on the lookout for resources to help strengthen her basic math skills. This session was very promising and I anticipate that she will greatly benefit from tutoring in this area."
