Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on the homework for his calculus I class during our session. The topic the homework focused on was the chain rule. He had little difficulty understanding the homework and even though the homework was significant in length, he was able to complete it with little assistance. His trouble with the chain rule comes from simple mistakes that he can easily correct on his own once the mistake is pointed out."
"Today, the student and I began a new section of material which involves the manipulation of square roots. Because he was sick and missed both class and our last tutoring session, I had concerns that I would not be able to give him the leg up he needed to excel on his test tomorrow. The student impressed me, however, and after some direction, showed competency in the subject. He may need to practice extensively on his own in order to perform well on the test tomorrow."
"In this first lesson, I did an overview with the four students to ascertain their levels and goals. I began very simply, with pronouns and regular verbs, and found out that they had covered this. I also talked about pronunciation and phonetics throughout the lesson. For the last half, we did casual speaking exercises with each other."
"Since the student has her Spanish written final exam the next day, we spent the time simply reviewing some important concepts that we had previously discussed. We talked about when to use certain verb tenses such as preterit and imperfect as well as indicative and subjunctive. We reviewed many different grammar rules such as ser vs. estar, pronouns, adjectives, articles, demonstratives, direct and indirect objects, etc. We essentially started from the beginning of the semester and moved through it and addressed any issues that the student had."
"The student and I spent our last session reviewing his previous homework assignment. We finished the session by discussing decimal places. His homework assignment will cover decimals."
"In this session, the student and I went over some of the multiplication and division with decimals problems that she had gotten wrong on her homework. We then worked through some word part workbook pages, focusing on looking at the different parts to determine the overall definition of the word. Lastly, I had her work through some practice multiple choice math problems and explain to me her problem-solving steps along the way. She had to reason out to me what she was doing for each step. When she thought the problems through one step at a time, she did very well with them."
"We discussed concepts pertaining to the cardiovascular system today. I had the student trace the path of blood flow through the heart, and was pleased that she came through on this. We also talked about homeostatic imbalances in terms of the heart function. We ended with a review of the conduction system of the heart. Overall, it was a good session."
"The student and I worked on another review to prepare for his final. Topics covered were graphing of lines and inequalities, factoring, and word problems. Tuesday night, he was having difficulty graphing; last night, he showed definite signs of improvement in creating x,y charts to graph, and shading inequalities. He is still a little confused on slope, but I created "cheat sheets" of information for him to reference, and we continued to create note-cards for confusing topics. I feel more confident in his abilities to do well on his final. Even though concepts may initially confuse him, with enough effort and concentration, he is able to increase his comprehension and execution."
"The student and I started working on the essay portion of the SSAT. We went over some grammar, including verb conjugations and articles. We also talked about how to write with imagery to make the reader more interested."
"We covered more momentum and impulse problems, getting him ready for his test next week. We reviewed what I had assigned him last session, coming up with different mental constructs for all the equations on his equation sheet."
"Student 1 and I finished his English homework and studied for his upcoming science test (states of matter, physical vs chemical changes). We were able to find some quizzes online that helped us a great deal. Student 2 and I began studying for the December ACT. We went over the test basics and focused on English and math. Both students did a very good job!!"
"We revised essay for the student and discussed the method for essay construction and revision. We went through four revisions before completion. The student should continue to improve at essay construction."
