Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I applied the skills we had worked on in the last session to an actual assignment that he was working on editing. I challenged him to justify how his paper acted as an answer to the prompt he had been given and we worked on the logic of the paper's organization and his assessment of his sources."
"The student and I worked on her compare/contrast essay for her community college class. She and I were able to finish the entire paper, despite some few edits and a conclusion paragraph. The first draft of this essay is due tomorrow. Next Steps: She will continue working on the last part of her essay and will submit two copies of the assignment to her instructor at 8:00AM."
"Today we worked on analyzing a short story ("The Tell Tale Heart") and discussing the symbolism and larger themes within it. The student could easily identity potential symbols within the story."
"Essay coverage including multiple revisions of six essays, all intended for submissions to the college boards at multiple colleges throughout the country. Student was attentive and highly skilled with the use of passive language."
"He has not completed reading "Fast Food Nation," but has completed more than half of "Welcome to the Monkey House." We discussed both books and discussed his overall thesis for "Monkey House" and the literary devices being used throughout the book. He is to have completed his outline for FFN and complete the other book."
"The student and I worked on his writing assignment for his English class, which was an expository essay about J.D. Salinger. He did very well with his research and really seemed to grasp the use of language for the topic. Hoping for the best on his essay grade!"
"The student and I finished improvements on the essay from Tuesday's session. His transitions and details saw the biggest changes. We also focused on word choice and concise wording. The last 20 minutes were spent looking for spelling and grammatical errors. He plans to type the essay and submit it to his English teacher to be graded. He has a hard time critiquing his own writing, but does a nice job making changes once I point out errors or aspects that could be improved."
"The student and I worked on her English essay tonight. She is bright, creative, and committed to doing her best. Her work ethic is inspiring and impressive. We worked on distilling her ideas and practiced proper grammar skills. She learns quickly. We will continue to work on her grammar skills as we continue working together."
"She had an essay due Wednesday. She wanted help picking out quotes to use from each work in each of her three body paragraphs and how to analyze them. She struggled a bit with creating depth to her analysis, but we discussed how to get there by going back to the text and the prompt as she wrote her essay to ensure that she was arguing a thesis that supported the prompt."
"We worked on a draft of a history paper that the student was writing for the next day. As things stood, her thinking was very strong, and she was able to fully translated it to the page. We did reshape the body paragraphs, and discussed revising the conclusion. She seemed happy with the state of the paper when I left, and ready to add in the finishing touches."
"The student and I worked on her English assignments for class. We worked through her picking a topic for a research paper she is working on and began the process. We then worked on her vocabulary and grammar homework."
"Got to know the student and see where she's at and what skills she would like to develop; worked on essay prep and organization, talked a bit about finding resources/scholastic criticism that supports essay writing."
