Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session, the student and I practiced vocabulary words, phonics and spelling rules. She has a test Friday, and her knowledge of the 27 weekly vocabulary words, phonics and spelling rules will be evaluated. Our review included: (1) the student reading the list of vocab words aloud four times; (2) my reading the words aloud and her writing each one down, so that she could practice spelling each one correctly; (3) the student spelling aloud the two words she misspelled when writing the words, then writing them again correctly four times apiece; (4) the student writing five examples of each phonic/spelling rule; and (5) the student filling in the blanks for seven sentences, with her options being "there," "their," and "they're.""
"We started reading a Geronimo book the student borrowed from the library. After two chapters we stopped and did a writing exercise to predict what will happen next in the story. I had the student write down a keyword for each of the beginning, middle and end of his story to give him structure. He struggled at first, wanting to simply state each section in a sentence or two. However, I gave him suggestions about how to be more descriptive and detailed in his story. We both wrote our stories for about 25 minutes. The student wrote 90 words and has another 35 word minimum to complete by next Saturday."
"I specifically covered writing lower case "a." The student had a good attitude. I kept his focus on the creativity of why he was writing out certain words rather than on his writing skills."
"I have started reviewing all the concepts of an 4th grade Language Arts assessment. We covered the Latin roots and affixes, antonyms & synonyms, idioms, and how to use a thesaurus. The student struggled with antonyms and synonyms, we will review more next session. She was interested and willing to learn. I left her with a Junie B. Jones book to read and to find the main idea of the story."
"During this session, we prepared for the student's upcoming exams. We worked on some assignments from his school and then reviewed material for his first exam later in the week. He seemed comfortable with the material and had a good grasp on the questions."
"I answered some questions the student had, and we then spent some time looking at a globe and talking about the places we have been and would like to go."
