Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is taking her SAT tomorrow. We did more critical reading practice, a little bit of grammar practice, and then talked about essay approaches again. She did some independent writing multiple choice questions and I could see her improvement in identifying grammar errors. I went over last minute test day information and strategies."
"-The student had math homework on special triangles. We reviewed 45-45-90 triangles together and she was then able to complete her math packet. I then continued to break down this concept and we worked on practice problems in order to better understand"
"Met with the student for an hour and a half. We went over multiplying/dividing/adding/subtracting polynomials, using the FOIL method, and also factoring. Worked with another student for 45 minutes on fractions-adding, subtracting, comparing. We also did a few two-step problems involving multiplication and division. He seems to be doing great."
"The student and I went over nomenclature of organic compounds. She had many questions regarding some of the more complicated naming structures. Also, we went over approximately 1/3 of her exam, which covered naming and other chemical properties. She seems to have retained a lot of the material that we've covered and I am glad with the success she's been having with answering some of those exam questions. Next session we plan on going over basic reactions."
"The student and I reviewed an essay that he wrote in response to a sample SAT prompt, and his writing has improved dramatically from when we first started. The fluidity of his sentences is coming together and he clearly understands the need for structure in his essays. The supporting examples that he came up for his argument were all appropriate for the prompt, but he needs to come up with more of the "big-picture" statements that make an example more powerful. He also showed improvement with his multiple choice practice over the past few weeks, but when I put him under the time constraints that he will experience on the real SAT, his scores slipped a little bit. We will continue practicing with the time restriction so that he becomes more comfortable working at a faster pace."
"The student and I reviewed reading and writing topics, in line with our new focus. I found some SAT Sentence Completion questions and we reviewed them. Additionally, we went through reading comprehension passages 1, 2, 3, and 5. The student said that he found these exercises particularly helpful."
"This was my first session with the student, who is in 8th grade algebra. Her goal is to pass the test to get into geometry honors. We planned a schedule to cover all 13 chapters and this session we covered chapter 1. We discussed strengths and weaknesses, and did some mental math and challenge problems from the book. She is off to a great start in reviewing algebraic concepts."
"The student and I worked on Physics for the first time in a while. Her physics class has been a lot more straightforward since finishing up the first part of magnetism. Today we did a large homework assignment on inductance. We found a really good answer key to work with that was extremely helpful in directing to the correct equation."
"The student and I worked on trig. He was working on an assignment that asked him to graph various trig functions. He also had to identify the different parts of the trig functions that affect the resulting graph. We also looked at a word problem that involved graphing a cosine function based on a roller coaster scenario. As usual, the student did a good job with the assignment."
"Tonight, the student and I completed the display board portion of his project. We also practiced his presentation, to make sure that he could answer any questions. He was very good at anticipating questions that his teacher might ask."
"We did some more work with resistors in series and parallel today, and moved on to capacitors in series and parallel. The student asked some good questions and has a better handle on the subject than before."
"Introduced the student to various types of analogy relationships. The student is to begin practicing with those this week in preparation for testing. Next we focused on math concepts for SSAT Middle. After reviewing her work from the previous week we spent time with order of operations , distributive property , integers, and variables. This week she will have several practices in these areas for mastery since the concepts are relatively new."
