Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"He showed demonstrable improvement this session. He answered nearly all the questions correct as we covered a variety of topics, including area, Pythagorean theorem, and others. I wish him the best in his future endeavors."
"The student and I went through the last math section of his practice tests, and then most of a reading section. He has been doing really well on all of his practice tests. We will move into another book to continue the practice work."
"Focused on the Math section of the ACT, going through practice problems, focusing on Geometry, Fractions, Trigonometry, and math basics, techniques/strategy, and using time wisely. His goal is to find the key pieces of information contained in each question."
"Today I had the student work on some math and English ACT problems to get a good idea of what she needs to work on. She definitely needs to build up her math skills through learning the quick tricks and formulas. She is extremely capable of doing well in Math. She did extremely well on English, so I am not going to focus too much on the English, except for having her work on practice problems throughout. This week we are going to do some diagnostic practice with Reading and Science."
"The student and I began studying for the ACT today. We did a general test overview and practiced portions of all four subject tests. She has some additional practice across the board for the next week."
"We began going methodically through the different subject areas, to see where the student might have weak spots or unknown strengths. As it turned out, following a brief refresher, she had a good instinct for the material. We covered arithmetic, relationships between numbers, basic word problems, and number theory, before moving into geometry and spending a good deal of time rehashing most of this. But the student aced every exercise on the material, so she's picking it right back up."
"I conducted a brief academic interview with the student and had him go over his experience in school and his history with the ACT exam and the skills that it measures. Then he took several practice sections of the English, Reading and Writing parts of the exam before we analyzed his strategies and began going over his answers and the reasoning skills behind them."
"The student and I worked on math and reading - he's doing really well. We're working from the ACT book and another math/science book. We're also working in the red book, and I assigned him a full math test from the red book to do for homework before next session."
"The student and I went over some English rules. Especially regarding style questions. He had said that on the last practice test that he had taken, he was running out of time and that was causing him to miss questions. I watched him answer a few questions and it seemed to me that he had developed a much better pace and good strategy in eliminating wrong answers. I insisted that we spend a little time on math, in particular some of the math subjects that he may not have used in while, but may show up on the test. I was glad that I did, because after the test, he reported that he had found that section a little difficult."
"Today we went over the logistics of the ACT test that the student is going to take on Tuesday. We went over test strategy, and today we focused primarily on the math and science sections of the test. We also went over a reading section of the test. We discussed formulas and strategies for speed and accuracy. We will continue tutoring tomorrow."
"As this was my first session with the student, we started out with some discussion of how her past ACTs have gone and goal setting. She would like to raise her composite score one to two points. She knows there is more room for improvement in math and science, so those are the sections most of our tutoring sessions will focus on. We went over some general test strategies and test basics. After that, we got started on the math section, paying attention to trig questions, as the student had the hardest time with these during the diagnostic test. Before the next session, she will read about some specific math strategies, study several formulas, and learn her first 20 vocab words."
"Covered ACT reading section. Hannah scored a 30 so I think it's safe to say that her performance on her last ACT was a fluke. She also wrote an essay. I gave her an 8/12. We also went over the writing section from last session. I gave her a 9/12. Her writing seems to really be improving. She still needs help with formal aspects of her writing but the content is sophisticated."
