Tutoring review by Michael in Chamblee, GA
This week we looked towards the end of our work with radical functions, further practicing solving equations with radicals and rational exponents. We also looked at graphing radical/rational exponent functions, performing transformations on such functions, and identifying their domain and range. We can expect to apply the equation-solving skills moving forward, to solve inequalities involving similar types of expressions.

Tutoring review by Sarah in Chamblee, GA
The student is working on a portfolio project for his Earth Science class. He is collecting work from across the entire school year that fits four different topics given from a list. While he did keep up with the organization system we set up a while ago, the majority of his classwork is bundled into a "junk" folder. We were able to find three different projects for his portfolio. He picked four topics, but hasn't yet decided which project to pick for each one. Each project must be accompanied by a cover letter explaining why the project fits the topic. We made a template cover letter with the categories the student felt were important to include in the cover letter and those required by the rubric, then worked on drafts for the first two projects. The student was quick on picking out his mistakes and omissions in the first draft, and was able to make a near-perfect first draft for the second project. He has three weeks to do it, but this should be done relatively quickly. Good job! The student has a few to-do lists on each of his drafts (finding out specific information, tracking down additional material, etc.), as well as the general directive of picking out all of his earth science notes for the year and putting them into a single folder.

Tutoring review by Jennifer in Chamblee, GA
The student had understood the fundamentals of finding the greatest common factor of monomials, but ended up getting only 15/20 on her homework due to "simple mistakes" (subtraction and integer division issues). We corrected the homework together and moved on to LCM. She knew the trick about multiplying the two different numbers together to find a common denominator, but couldn't confirm whether that was truly the LEAST common multiple. Using prime factorization, she learned how to verify that an answer really was the least for both integers and variables. For science, we talked about the Law of Superposition and used it in two different ways - to compare the relative ages of organisms and to find the sequence of events in a landform. Friday will be a review day and Tuesday will be the unit exam.

Tutoring review by Leah in Chamblee, GA
The student and I met today to go over a range of different issues. She had received her mark for her philosophy paper, but would have liked to have done better. Looking over her work compared to one of the higher graded papers, it was clear that she understands the concepts, but loses marks because of the articulation of her argument. This can be easily improved with practice, lots of drafts, and time for rewriting. We also spent some time looking over her proposal for her social entrepreneurial project. She has a number of exams and assignments coming up, so we tried to make a plan regarding when to meet and the topics we need to focus on. I have asked her to send me her syllabi so that I can tailor some exercises. I have also asked her to try to schedule times to send me her drafts, before the due date, so that there is time for editing and rewriting. She did send me her policy paper rewrite, which I edited, so that she can resubmit.

We went over implicit differentiation. The student was uncertain as to the purpose of such a process as well as how it is performed. We reviewed the process step by step making sure he comprehended the math involved. When he felt he had an understanding we performed some examples together. He has a test on Wednesday.
