Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began by reviewing. Her class had nearly finished up the Civil War unit, and the student knows her stuff on this topic. We went over the questions she was unsure about. She read aloud from her textbook, and we discussed the material. Afterwards, she synthesized this new information and put it on her poster board, along with facts about key Civil War battles. We will look at the Reconstruction Period and do some writing practice during our next session."
"Today was my first session with the student. He needed help working on a project about James Garfield (20th president of the United States). After going over the rubric sheet and discussing which bits of information are to be included, we started making a border and title on his poster board where all the information is to be presented. He had 2 website sources as well as a book from his school library about James Garfield. For next time, I told him to make bullet points for the aspects about James Garfield (family, early/adult life, accomplishments during his presidential term, etc.), and we plan to format everything and print out the facts so we can put them onto the poster board for his presentation."
"Today we reviewed Chapter 4 (Ancient Indian and Chinese civilizations) and worked through the rest of the Lesson 2 assignment. We started the session with a review of the chapter, which I think helped cement some of the themes for the student. We completed the multiple choice and short answers, and talked about the organization for the essays. She grasped some of the concepts very easily and was able to locate them in the text; she got a little mixed up with which civilizations came first and what principles belong to which religion. For the next chapter, I suggested that she take notes summarizing the chapters as she reads, which I think will help keep things clearer. I also suggested that she write a timeline for events and civilizations in the chapter. Next week we will review and work on Chapter 5."
