Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Fantastic session! We worked on geometry skills that are present on the PSAT and sentence correction. The sessions are going much more smoothly and the student is continuing to do well. She is become more self-aware of areas of need in her skill set and is becoming proactive in strengthening them. We also had a great time with some grammar elements like S-V agreement; parallelism; and concision. We have two weeks between this past session and her next one because her family will be out of town and I will also be out of town. Over this break she will be taking another practice test and completing an analysis of her errors on the first and second practice psat tests."
"We worked on improving the student's reading comprehension, as he received results from a standardized test he took in school that indicated he needed to improve in this area. We also did a bit of grammar work."
"I met with the student to prepare him for a trig exam on Monday. He had previously struggled with a quiz on combinations, permutations, and nested functions. We went over those topics somewhat superficially the last time we met in favor of getting a good handle on recursive functions. This time we looked more thoroughly at the mechanisms behind the combinatorics formulas. I showed him ways of handling factorial expressions and how to formulate problems out of combinatorics scenarios. We only met for an hour this time, but we are due for a two hour practice session on Saturday, so hopefully he will have time to prepare for this test. I assigned him the chapter test for review."
"Practice Science section of an ACT practice test in order to continue to familiarize student with the question format and tricks for success on the Science Reasoning section. Student does very well on this practice session. Began new English practice section of ACT practice test in order to identify the major traps the ACT writers place in the test to get students to miss questions."
"I prepared a practice final on the science topics that the student has covered this semester. She studied for test and did well on the material. We spent a lot of time reviewing topics that she didn't understand and/or she had covered early on in the semester. I was able to clarify topics that weren't covered clearly and expand her knowledge on topics to allow her to get a better grasp of the material."
"The student and I reviewed his study guide for his final exam. We spent a majority of the time clarifying any questions he had about his study guide. We also covered a little bit of the history of Chinese characters. Overall, it was time well spent."
"We focused on the math section almost the entire session. The student had completed a practice test that morning and scored about a 28, which was great, and we reviewed the questions he got wrong. I also showed him how to use various functions on his calculator. I reviewed key formulas he will need to know for the test and asked him to memorize them. I discussed how many questions he'll need to get correct in each subject to achieve his target score. He is making great progress overall, and he has a positive attitude and strong work ethic."
"The student and I emailed about her writing over the weekend, and then we picked up with a reading exam tonight. She did a good job with the questions and only missed a few. Her essays did a good job of answering the prompt and backing it up with evidence from the text. She just needs to double check some of her words and edit a bit. We talked about using her time to make a rough draft before doing the final short answer questions. I really enjoyed working with her. She is a smart, fun girl and should do well!"
"Today the student and I reviewed chapter 6 and 11.9 in preparation for Monday's test. We had already covered chapter 6 extensively, so we began by working through practice problems in 11.9. He did very well, though he had a bit of trouble on the more challenge problems. He did come to the correct answers after some guidance, however. After I felt that he had mastered the material, I chose problems from chapter 6 (probability, odds, proportions, ratios) for him to review."
"We reviewed most of the student's Mastering Chemistry homework. His last assignment he was able to complete at home. He is keeping on top of his assignments. Getting there!"
"The student struggles with anxiety on chemistry tests and is worried about her upcoming final. we have been working on old and new material - stoichiometry, molarity, and specific heat problems using Hfus and Hvap. I told her I would try and find some practice problems for the last topic to start with next time we meet."
"Today we covered solving an equation with fractions in the constant terms and variables, with variables on both sides of the equation and with more than one variable (a,b,y,etc.). We also covered several methods for using the calculator to work through these equations."
