Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we had a wrap-up test of what we've learned in previous lessons in the first half hour and the student did a very good job. Then we started Lesson Three. We learned how to ask people's names in both casual ways and polite ways. We also learned several emotion words/ modal particles. For now, she needs more work on switching between front/ back nasals, the initial "r," and the third tone."
"The student and I spent most of the session going over different words and expanding his word bank. We worked on numbers 1-15, color words, and animal words. We also played a ball game so we could use action verbs (catch, throw, and kick) and direction words (up, down). We played a racing game with toy animals and cars to practice adjectives like fast and slow, and other words like go, stop, run, and walk. We used a dry erase board to draw a person and practice words for body parts (hand, head, eyes, nose, ear, mouth, face, arm, feet, leg). We made paper shamrocks to give to several of the student's toys to wish them "good luck." I corrected his pronunciation when needed. We also worked on basic greetings and courtesy words (hello, how are you, I'm fine, good bye, thank you, you are welcome); objects and nouns (ball, balloon, egg, baby, mom, dad, carrot, etc.); adjectives (big, small, tall, fast, and slow); and verbs (jump, shake, cut, throw, kick, catch, dance). We sang a song about numbers, another song about colors, another song about basic greetings and asking a person's name, and finally, a happy birthday song."
"The student and I practiced writing her name and doing simple addition today. Her letters are looking better. Math wise, we are working on simple addition. She can count fine in Mandarin and understands addition and subtraction when shown objects to count with."
