Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued discussing the reading section, reviewing the final two passage types: humanities and natural sciences. Her command of the method is sound, and she will only improve with further practice. Additionally, when she gets problems wrong, she is able to see where her thinking went awry, which bodes well for her ability to improve over time."
"The student had finished one section. We went over the questions that gave her issues any way. I saw that she annotated a lot of things. Occasionally she highlighted specific details such as dates, but things that aren't so critical to the passage. We did 2 practice passages together and identified the importance of reading the question critically."
"We started the session by finishing the reading section in practice test 2 and then did the science section. We got started on the English section (the first 45 questions). Her homework is all of practice test 3."
"The student and I began by discussing her mindset and approach to taking standardized test. She had previously sent me an essay from her diagnostic test, which I looked over and graded prior to the session. We walked through the essay together addressing issues involving grammar, structure, and diction, with particular emphasis on providing support for her arguments. We spent the final part of the session working on outlining techniques and crafting strong thesis statements."
"This was the second to last session before the student's admissions test. He was doing really well in the practice test. He finished on time and only a limited amount of wrong answers. I believe the student has improved drastically since our first session and he will do very well on this test."
"We went over a diagnostic test I created that included vocab, math, and reading questions. We created a plan in which I will send 10-15 problems a night as practice. Additionally I sent some vocabulary websites since that was a particular area of difficulty."
"The student took a practice math section from the newly arrived test prep book. We set out decoding the questions she got wrong. On most of them, once I explained how to set up what the question was asking, she was able to see how to do the math, which is good. We just have to work on her ability to make those connections on her own. She plans on taking an English section before we meet again."
"The student and I met today and went through a reading section and science section. We did a walk through of the science sections to focus on advanced understanding of the critical assessment. We worked through the understanding of graphs and breaking down the questions to make them much simpler. We are going to meet and start using internet quizzes to further understanding and familiarity."
"The student made good progress on math today- substitution in algebraic equations and geometry. We started on reading and will dig deeper over the next few sessions into strategies for increasing speed and handling second guessing."
"For this lesson, the student and I continued working on the SAT Reading and Writing sections. I have seen a lot of improvement in the writing, with the student getting most of the improving sentence and paragraph questions right. On the Reading, his vocabulary has improved a lot and he only really missed the questions with the hardest vocabulary. On the passages, he does very well on the more factual and straightforward passages but still has some trouble with the more abstract ones. Lastly, we worked on a section of the math and he completed it perfectly."
"We discussed some of the grammar covered on the writing section. We also worked through several writing sections. Both students are making excellent progress on this section. I did not assign homework, but I will be sending them a review of grammar rules."
"The student and I went over test number five in depth and covered a good amount of math problems from the book as well. Her practice test score was 1575, which is significantly higher than before. The student understands the need to approach the test as a game, a series of tasks to complete, and is getting better at figuring out which questions to skip and which to guess on. Good progress here."
