"The student took some practice tests today. She had finished with over 10 minutes to spare, so I encouraged her to slow down, read directions more carefully, and improve her score in that way. On her second practice test, we used the harder problem set in an attempt to build confidence."
"The student and I focused on Critical Reading strategies and sentence completion. Comparing two texts was not very challenging, but the longer reading passages were difficult for her. She is going to continue working on her pre/suffix/root word lists for our next session. We will also focus more on the longer passages at the next session."
"As today was our first session together, my primary goal was to determine where the student will need the most help in preparing for the SAT. In order to make this determination, I had him answer a series of questions from the official SAT website that were representative of what he will encounter on the critical reading section and the writing section of the actual test. Overall, I was very pleased with what I saw. The student's performance was indicative of good reading comprehension and strong verbal reasoning ability. His performance on the paragraph revision questions was exceptional, and suggests to me that he will have little trouble writing a well organized essay. Putting aside his strong performance, I was able to identify some areas where it will be important for him to improve if he intends to get the highest score he is capable of. First, his vocabulary needs to be expanded. Second, he would benefit from using new strategies in the passage based questions. Finally, he needs help understanding sentence structure. We will focus on all these areas in the coming weeks. I look forward to helping him realize his potential."
