"The student and I tried different approaches for solving systems of equations in two variables first, with a geometric method, then with an algebraic substitution method. We took this opportunity to also practice our skills in solving linear equations and graphing lines."
"The first student and I covered more dividing fractions and word problems. Then, we covered comparing large mixed numbers. Finally, we discussed units and compared converting between the metric and American systems.
The second student and I continued word problems calculating annual compound interest and exponential population growths."
The second student and I continued word problems calculating annual compound interest and exponential population growths."
"We talked about multiplying and dividing polynomials, adding and subtracting polynomials, factoring, least squares, graphing polynomials, pointslope equations, slopeintercept equations, and systems of equations. I specifically assigned him several groups of questions covering systems of equations that include fractions. He should also spend some time looking over the upcoming three or so lessons in his text."
"Today we started with going over questions her instructor had given her in a quiz today. Two of them were word problems, where you had to set up a set of equations and solve for two variables. She had a little bit of difficulty setting up the equations, but she was able to solve them very easily once it was set up. We then went over problems where we had to solve for x in a complex expression, and I told her to start getting in the habit of moving parts of the equation to the other side in her head, especially when it comes to adding or subtracting."
"During today's session I reviewed the student's previous homework so she could understand how to correctly complete the problems. We then moved to her most recent homework assignment and completed it together."
"The student and I covered solving multistep equations as well as variables on both sides. She did have a worksheet for homework on that material and also a quiz for Friday. I let her work the problems and checked them individually, we also walked through them verbally to make sure she understood her steps. I gave her some additional practice problems and we took a mini practice quiz for preparation for tomorrow's quiz."
"Today we did the review test for the 3rd module in the student's online class. This covered solving quadratic equations and their graphs. She did the best with using the quadratic formula and simple factoring, and needed more help with the concept of completing the square and understanding the concept of simplifying radicals. Ultimately she got a perfect score on the review test. Tomorrow we will work on stats and do some ACT work."
"We went through graphing functions and finding the slope of a line. I saw improvements in algebra knowledge and quickness and solving equations for variables. We'll continue to work with fractions in equations and in any forms, such as adding and subtracting them. I left the student to finish the homework assignment and to read over the notes."
"We covered domain and range and reviewed our discussion of tables, graphs, and expressions. He demonstrated excellent retention of the material, and we moved ahead to new material concerning linear expressions."
"Today we completed the pupil's homework for the week and went over his test from last week. While I am eager to see how he is doing in physics, his math is good, and he seems to be understanding the new material. I will try to help him sort out the proper steps to take to simplify and solve problems, but mainly I am trying to get him to organize his work better so he won't lose track of morecomplex problems. Thus, we went over some of the test questions he got wrong, so he could sort out his steps and find the correct answer."
"Today we worked on quadratic equations factoring, completing the square, and using the quadratic formula to solve. We also talked about graphing finding axis of symmetry, vertex, and knowing whether the parabola opens up or opens down. The student did well with solving a quadratic by graphing. She also did well with finding roots by taking a square root. Factoring and completing the square seemed to be the most challenging parts. She did pretty well with using the quadratic formula and tends to not make little mistakes when substituting in numbers for variables."
"Tonight we met for an hour and a half. We began by figuring out where she was struggling with the previous chapter and figuring out why the solutions were the way that they were. I continued to remind her that it's not enough to have the right answer but rather to know WHY the answer was right or wrong. We did so by going over her Chapter 2 exam. We then began her Hw for 3.6, and I noticed that she was struggling with fractions so I spent ~30 going over various fraction problems and conversions so that she could nail her basics before transitioning to more complex math. After our fractions segue, we worked through her Hw by doing problems that she wasn't assigned so that she could know how to do them rather than have me give her solutions. I left her with the rest of her Hw to complete on her own. I left with no concerns, and she said that she felt comfortable with her current material."
