Annie ...“when you do good things, good things happen.” Students know that “good things” include both character-building practices that keep us and other members of our classroom community safe, as well as hard work, which pays off, both through extrinsic rewards and through internal satisfaction, pride, and increased ability to become stronger learners.... In order to help a student become a more independent learner, I use two primary strategies. First, I encourage and assist students in finding multiple ways to solve the same problem. Doing so often helps students develop a much deeper understanding of content. Second, I challenge students to teach and explain content back to me after they feel comfortable with the material. This allows students to move past a basic understanding towards mastery, which is necessary to teach said content to someone else successfully.
