Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent today's session going over the rest of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. After finishing the book and getting a detailed summary of the plot together, including the character's names and their motivations, we looked at some of the symbolism in the book. He seemed to pick up the material quickly, and suggested that we look at Prince Caspian next week. I did not assign any further reading or assignments."
"Tonight the student told me he got a 100 on his quiz last week on the Thoreau essay we discussed in our last session. Tonight we worked on rewriting an in-class sample SAT essay on nature vs. civilization. The student understands in theory how to make an argument and create points, but he says his ideas get jumbled in his head. I had him write down his ideas when they came to him and to make lists that compared nature and civilization and it seemed like that helped him understand what points he needed to make. He's definitely getting better with his reading comprehension and pulling out ideas in sentences. The student has a great attitude and a lot of patience when it comes to the difficult parts of his studies - such a neat kid to work with."
"We went over the student's homework from last week, which included an essay, critical reading, vocabulary and improving sentences/grammatical questions. His results on vocabulary questions have definitely improved. His results have been helped, I think, by his new ability to break down unknown vocabulary using roots, and common prefixes/suffixes to infer their meaning. His essay writing has also become clearer and easier to follow, since he now commits to a clear thesis before proceeding to provide supporting examples. We spent time working on grammar-related questions, sentence completion and outlining an essay in response to a prompt. Since he is taking the SAT for the first time next week, I talked him through the different sections of the test and we discussed strategies to help him prepare and maintain his energy on the day of the test. I left him with an essay and a variety of practice sections."
