"In today's session we worked on vocabulary and an understanding of literary structure and theme. We went through a few assigned vocabulary words for his English class, and I recommended to him that he try to pronounce them to himself while practicing as a way of better remembering them. We also went over theme and how to understand the theme of a work of literature, especially by way of an understanding of symbols. We looked at some examples of symbols in books he has read and how the conflict, characters, and setting of a book all can be seen as symbols used to make up the book's theme. All in all he seemed to absorb the material well."
"Tonight the student and I worked primarily on "Annabel Lee" by Edgar Allen Poe. We went over the meter for a while, which was definitely a challenge and a little confusing, but he started to get the rhythm as we went along. We talked about the repeating words in the poem as well as the rhyme patterns. He also has a poem he has to write for class so we talked about using his chosen vocabulary words as jumping off points where he could make lists and phrases and start to find the topic of his poem. He did great, hard work tonight."
"This time was a bit different than usual because the student needed to study for an AP European History exam, though I did try to incorporate some reading techniques into the process. For studying, he would read a section and take notes on the most important topics, thus practicing filtering through all of the extraneous information usually present in a lot of texts to reach the most important pieces to take away from the text."
