Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on improving his Verbal SAT score by maximizing his time and using strategies to identify unknown vocabulary and clarify his point of view in essays. We worked on breaking down words to find common suffixes and prefixes whose meanings he can identify and which in turn help him identify the meaning of the word. We also worked on clarifying and simplifying his essays. I left him with two essay questions and the challenge to be as simple, direct and clear as possible. I also left him two full Verbal SAT tests to work on."
"There were no upcoming assignments today so I took the opportunity to give the student some more tools for general success with English. We worked on suffixes, prefixes, and root words - with a solid knowledge of these words, he will be better able to deal with new words that come up. The student seemed engaged. I did not assign any future homework, but only encouraged him to read as much in English as he can."
"I edited the student's paper and worked to provide suggestions on how to improve the thesis, grammar structure, and flow. The student is working on a second draft of the paper to be re-submitted tomorrow."
"I worked with the student on his math, which was a review for his quiz tomorrow. He mainly did the work, with reminders from me to check it throughout to make sure it makes sense, as well as reminders to label the graph and axis. We then worked on his DBQ essay. I was able to see how he writes and spells. We went over strategies such as using the written text as a dictionary, and using the background information to guide the essay and organize his thoughts. He wrote the essay and I helped him correct and add to it. I asked him to make sure to show me his grade next time. He told me he was confident he would get in the 90s."
"In this session, the student and I wrote an outline for his genre analysis assignment. We talked about what would go in each body paragraph, what order those paragraphs should go in, and how to organize the ideas in each body paragraph. We also spent time analyzing the examples of the genre that he chose."
"We began tonight's session by coming up with a topic and thesis sentence for the student's upcoming research paper. We looked at multiple topics before finally finding one to use. The second half of our session focused on the writing of the synthesis essay. We used a previously released essay topic that I emailed to him, and we constructed an introduction and the first body paragraph. He will write the rest of the essay on his own, and we will evaluate it during our session on Wednesday. This was another strong session."
