Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over more system of equation problems, solving them by elimination. One question in particular took a long time because of mistakes in several places, requiring her to go back and correct herself several times."
"The student and I started an new chapter on sequences and series. We covered the first section on sequences and summations and started the next section on arithmetic sequences. The student has done very well at adjusting to the new notations and has learned to use her knowledge to get the right answer."
"The student had been given instructions from his teacher to redo two math homework assignments in addition to completing his assignment for that night. First, we reviewed the two assignments he had struggled with, and noted that they were older concepts from the beginning of the year. I showed him how to draw his graphs neatly and properly, and helped him remember how to draw factor trees for composite numbers. Next, he worked on the homework assignment from that night, which was another review chapter, but this time on finding the greatest common factor. All of these concepts seem to be review in preparation for a final exam, so as he went through, I made sure he understood how to complete all of the problems."
"Today, we went over how to compare and reduce fractions by playing a game based on the card game, "War." The student did a good job with this task. He was able to reduce the fractions to the lowest numbers possible with very little prompting from me, other than some of the bigger numbers such as 2/32. We also went over some area and volume problems for cubes and rectangular prisms. The student was able to remember the formulas for area and volume."
"The takeaway of today's session was that when faced with a long problem, one should write down the question as a mathematical expression and then focus on each part of it, one piece at the time. Doing so, a student can solve simpler sub-problems, whose solutions can be eventually put together to answer the initial question."
"The student and I spent the session reviewing for her algebra 1 final tomorrow. She had sent me the study guide she previously completed before the session, so I was able to take a look at that to see the problems with which she was having a bit of an issue. We worked on many different concepts, from negative exponents to factoring and long division with variables. Overall, she seemed to get the material pretty well, especially after I explained ideas like FOIL to her, but the most recurring challenge was adding and subtracting negative numbers in the long division. She definitely was very focused on her work, as I could see her writing the solutions to study later as we completed problems. Overall, she seems quite ready for her final."
