Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session the student and I focused on reading comprehension and writing fluency. In addition, we also reviewed adding and subtracting fractions. He was highly motivated and an overall joy to work with."
"During this session the student and I completed his multiplication tables and skip counting workbooks, working specifically on 6, 7, 8, and 9x tables. He initially stated that the concepts were hard, but he became able to work through the tables and worksheets very well. I also attempted to teach him a counting trick regarding the 9x tables, but it seemed to not "click" for him; I will work with him again next time to help him understand the mechanics of multiplications. Furthermore, I hope to integrate more word problems in order to help him become more used to the real-world applications of multiplication."
"Today we worked on basic multiplication and division facts. The student does well with multiplication but struggles with division. We played math games to help with automaticity with multiplication facts. The student can use strategies to help with getting the answers and just needs more practice getting the answers automatically. I left her with a page to practice multiplication and will leave her with math games to practice the rest of the week. She is very eager to learn and enjoyed the math games. Tomorrow we will focus on math and reading."
"We practiced writing words for actual numbers (ie. 1,000- one thousand; 345- three hundred forty five). He had a rough time with this a few weeks ago, but now he has gotten better. We spent a lot of time aiming for a certain time to finish 15-20 problems. If he did not reach the goal, then we tried again. We did basic math and subtraction problems while having 5 min, 1 min, and 30 second time segments. As soon as we began using three numbers instead of two, he started to take a little bit more time. He made little mistakes such as not carrying over the one to the other side, but he was being timed. We will focus on improving this in future sessions."
"I worked with the student on multiplication tables. He is remembering more and more of his multiplication tables. He is also able to count by 5s, 6s, and 7s when he doesn't remember the answer and is beginning to notice tricks to help on his own. We also did some multiplication word problems, added to the student's lists of clue words, and applied the multiplication tables to larger numbers up to 1000."
"Today was a really good session. We did test practice problems on probability, and a few more problems on patterns. The student had the first part of his exam today, so I tried to be really encouraging and highlight every time he got an answer right to boost his confidence. He still is a little shaky on identifying patterns, so I think that that needs some more practice, and we'll focus on that for a while after his test. I totaled the questions that he got right on the first try and he got an 85%, which is really good. I'm hoping that he feels better about going in for part 2 tomorrow!"
