Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on her history homework this afternoon. We focused specifically on a chapter in her history text book, and spent time answering targeted questions about the chapter, which she will eventually be tested on. She wrote full paragraph answers to each question, and we thought about best study practices to use in preparation for the test. She is still struggling with reading fluency, but it seems like her writing ability and confidence is improving. She was excited to tell me that she got an A on the writing assignment we worked on together last week: the highest grade she's gotten in history so far. We're seeing success!"
"Today we read the next chapter of 'Of Mice and Men'. We discussed what was going on in the chapter, and I encouraged the student to think analytically and critically about what we read. We also worked on studying for the upcoming ACT test. The student read a passage and answered the corresponding questions. My purpose was to assess his strengths and weaknesses with the standardized testing passage-based reading."
"In this session we completed an article of the week together. We focused on including key elements in the article of the week that the teacher noted had been missing. We then created a strategic outline for looking at articles and which steps to complete first so that the student can stay focused and on track while completing the articles."
"In this session, the student and I began discussing the relationship between theme and narrative, developing the conceptual foundations for his next writing project: a personal narrative discussing how his family's vacation to Hawaii helped him to realize the joys of adventure and the importance of family. We began a rough draft and will continue developing the structure of his essay in the coming sessions."
"Today we discussed the basic mechanical issues with which the student has shown a level of non-mastery. The student easily identified all punctuation marks and presented a high level of mastery on sample sentences. We discussed structural issues on his essay "Is Cheating a Crisis?", and he explained the purpose and structure of a five paragraph essay with ease and confidence. It appears that his issues remain tied to confidence and taking the time necessary to avoid simple mistakes. He was very pleasant and attentive. Homework was assigned and left with the student."
"In this session, the student and I spoke about comments I had on her personal statement for law school. I think she is off to an excellent start, and it was helpful to have a dialogue with her today to answer her questions and to explain my written feedback to her in more detail. I have also sent her that feedback so that she can use it in revising her personal statement before our next session. The student is clearly very motivated to work on her writing."
