Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered Perimeter and Area using regular and irregular shapes. The student used foam shapes to feel the sides to be measured as Perimeter. She then drew the shapes and counted the units to be totaled as Perimeter. She repeated the procedure for Area. She does well using hands on techniques, but needs assistance with just the picture models. We also did some algebraic equations using different values for different manipulatives and adding them and subtracting them. She did an outstanding job with algebraic equations."
"Did some spelling with the first student, took a break to finish up his math homework, and then went back to spelling. The second student restarted his treatise on dog ownership and the benefits thereof. After all the tutoring was done, I beat both students in a race, and shot around the basketball for a little while. It's just so nice out, I figured they should do a little bit of activity."
"The student is still doing well at Latin. He now has twenty prepositions to memorize, which I told him will be a challenge and he should definitely use flash cards. As for English, we are still trying to figure out what his teacher expects of him. His parents will be meeting with the English teacher soon."
"I met with the student on Saturday (4/7) at 1:00. I gave him an outline on how to prepare for his tests. I recommended that in addition to doing the reading, that he write concepts and vocabulary out himself so that he knows he has committed it to memory, rather than just being exposed to something repeatedly through reading without retaining the information. I will be contacting him on Wednesday to see how his first test went and make adjustments if necessary. Initially we agreed to meet again in 2 weeks but he has requested that we meet again this upcoming Saturday."
"The student wrote a new set of 3rd grade sight words. He wrote each word down three times as well as a sentence with each word. In addition to the new sight word list, the misspelled words from the previous session were reviewed and written in a sentence. He wrote all the sight words from the last two days. He also wrote a dictation from the text he read previously."
"Today we worked on algebra and science. The student and I reviewed algebra skills from the start of the semester (how to calculate slopes and solve equations) since she needs these skills for her quiz on Friday. After completing her homework we worked on pedigree diagrams, and she seems to understand the concepts well."
"The student and I worked solely on the verbal section today, going through her recent practice test and analyzing the thought process that went into her decisions on it and strategies that she could use going forward. We found some consistent and easily fixable issues in her approach to the verbal section which I hope will result in some quick improvements to her success on those sections of the test."
"This was our first session and we covered a variety of topics. We started the session with a brief overview of the math content and passing expectations. We talked about his strengths and weaknesses, as well as his goals. We then looked at some of the official released questions. We covered operations with rational numbers, ordering, ratios, and percent problems. We planned to continue working with percent increase/decrease problems during our next session on Sunday."
"In our session today, we covered the general chemistry concepts of gas phases and phase changes, and solutions. The student reinforced the concepts that he previously outlined through discrete questions that he successfully completed. He will be taking several full length MCAT exams to practice all concepts and test strategies he has learned."
"I continued to work with the students on verbal English presentation by reading two short stories aloud with them and having them summarizing the stories afterwards. I emphasized speaking in complete sentences and drawing ideas out of them with questions. Student A readily responds to questions and speaks well in short sentences. We will continue to practice sentence structure with spoken English."
"We reviewed scientific units and unit conversions. The student completed unit conversion problems with dimensional analysis. By the end of the session, she remembered more of the units. She grasps the material and has a better understanding of how to do dimensional analysis after she completed a few problems."
"We corrected the student's test, which she did very well compared to the previous one. We then studied her new topics together. It included system of two variable equations, identifying the number of solutions, graphing them and solving them."
