Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did extremely well today and made some very good intuitive leaps that he struggled with in previous sessions. For example, when given 12x6, he was able to make the leap that he could add 12 to the product of 12x5 to find the answer. I've tried showing him this shortcut before, but this is the first session he's been able to take the lead on this method of solving harder problems by piggybacking off of ones he knows. He also did very well in terms of simply knowing more of the times tables by heart. Next week I'm hoping to only spend twenty or so minutes on multiplication, and the rest of the session on fractions, since they've started them in school."
"The student did really well during today's session; he was very focused and put forth his best effort throughout our time together. We began by doing some initial work on the next level of fact power (the 6s). We focused on using benchmark fractions, such as 1/2, in order to compare the size of fractions. We used equivalent fractions (determining 1/2 for any denominator) and also drawing bars (when fractions had an odd denominator). There were also some problems related to multiples that we worked on as well. At the end, he was able to clearly articulate what we did. While he did well, I strongly think that he needs additional practice and more time focused on the concepts rather than the procedures to ensure complete and lasting understanding. We will continue to work on this."
"We started with division flashcards. The student was very engaged and showed some good strategies for figuring out the ones she didn't immediately know. Since it has been quite some time since we worked on this, it went a little bit slowly. The student then worked on a math website. Then we switched to working on the concept of counting coins by playing money bingo. With the few minutes that remained, we played one more math game."
"We continued to work on averages. We went over all the past work he had done and corrected the mistakes he made. Once I had him look at the problem again he knew where to make the corrections."
"This tutor met with Student 1 to complete a Think Thru Math session. The session focused on place value and converting values by multiplying by 10 or 1/10. This tutor focused on how going from left to right means divide by 10 and if you move to left multiply by 10. Next the tutor met with Student 2 to practice place value. This tutor had student pull 3 playing cards to pulled a number then write the expanded, model, and then develop a unique way to represent number. This tutor recognized that Student 2 is able to identify and count values with fewer errors and quicker. This tutor recommended the family continue activity."
"Today we covered percentages. Specifically converting them to fractions and decimals and finding percentages of a whole number. The student was interested in practicing word problems and needed some clarification on percentages greater than 100. I had him practice multiplying fractions to find percents and want him to continue checking himself when using mental math."
