We spent the first half working on the student's history homework about the Nixon presidency. We then spent the rest of the time on trigonometry, reviewing for the upcoming exam. We reviewed a few key concepts from last time and then focused on logarithms.

Tutoring review by Maxwell in East Cambridge, MA
It was a pleasure meeting the student and his mother last week. He has a lot of basic math concepts to learn. We started by outlining the foundations of geometry. He is very spatially aware and it really helps for him to see a concept in order to understand it. Geometry is mostly visual, so I think he will be able to pick it up pretty easily.

Today we covered the next chapter including ratios. Using the fact that the atoms bind in certain mass ratios when combining into molecules, we were calculating masses of atoms in molecules. The student is very confident in her abilities, and is quick and able to perform algebraic manipulations, and is eager to get ahead of her schedule.

The student and I went over solving linear inequalities. I taught her how to solve these problems and write interval notation, as well as graph on the number line. We went through many problems and reviewed solving compound inequalities as well. She is progressively getting better, but definitely understands the concepts.

Tutoring review by Michael in East Cambridge, MA
We spent most of today reviewing for a test that the student has tomorrow in his pre-calc class. It largely dealt with properties of exponents and simplifying rational equations of different kinds. I included my strategy of, when simplifying radicals, listing out the squares and choosing the largest one available. We also applied this strategy to cubes. We practiced factoring polynomials and solving by grouping. We went over the difference of two squares and practiced applying it in a few different expressions (some more complex than others). Lastly, we worked with piecewise functions that were created from absolute value functions, eventually learning that the function with the positive slope will always be for the "greater than" section of the equation. He seems to be all set for the test, and I hope he scores 100!
