Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We focused on Math. Spent 15 minutes checking arithmetic. The student remembers a lot of math skills, so she is in a great position. We spent the majority of time going over real GRE questions. Discussed approaches to the problems. Geometry, algebra, word problems, conversions, interest, and ratios were covered."
"The student and I reviewed the practice problems I had assigned and identified several areas where she was struggling. Then I covered basic test strategies and text completion strategies, after which we worked through several examples together. I shared an extra problem set for practice, but she will be taking her GRE in a day or two, so we decided she should just focus on vocabulary until the big day."
"We began by reviewing her assigned work. Of the two math sections assigned, she had more problems with the inequalities than with the work / rates problems. As we progressed through the inequalities, she did realize the reason for some of her confusion (mostly with regard to inequalities containing absolute values). This review took some time, so we then worked on a single new section, namely, functions / series / sequences. I assigned the first 50 problems of this chapter, a few more rates / work, and the reading comprehension questions that she did not have time to finish last time."
"This was the first time she and I worked together. I thought we established a good rapport and think we are a good fit for each other. We spent the first few minutes of the session talking about her GRE preparation, her testing experience, and what she expects out of tutoring. We then moved into working some sample (quant) problems together. I used this session to give her a variety of problems (e.g., probability, 2 equations 2 unknowns, word problems) and we started to identify both her strengths and some things we can work on together. She also provided a few questions over which she stumbled during her own preparation for the GRE and we solved them together."
"Today we went through the homework on the verbal reasoning that the student had done from our previous session. These were mostly questions related to the passages, and she did very well with these. We went through a few additional verbal reasoning problems, including some passage questions and some sentence equivalence questions. The student was doing very well again with a combination of adequate knowledge and good guesswork. We then moved onto the quantitative section. We had some trouble dealing with one problem on statistics. Beyond that, the student seems to have the math firmly in hand, but she does need some work on remembering the formulas related to shapes. This is something we might spend some time working on specifically in a later session, just to refresh her memory. In preparation for her next session, she is going to work on one question in the quantitative and verbal sections each a day."
"We met for the first time today. We went over a physical science diagnostic test. We went over any questions that the student had. Some of the topics we discussed included conservation of energy, acid/base chemistry, equilibrium, solubility, momentum, velocity, acceleration, Le Chatelier's principle, and kinematics. We also stressed strategy and discussed the importance of doing a biology diagnostic test this weekend."
