Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked through math homework, reviewing the Pythagorean theorem and Sine, Cosine, and Tangent. I went through these concepts with him carefully, to make sure that he remembered how to use them. He had learned them previously, so it was not very difficult and he remembered very quickly."
"The student read the ninth chapter of Magician's Nephew (Chronicles of Narnia). The goal is to finish and eventually complete the entire series. This strategy, although long winded is necessary, as a means to help the student get adjusted to sentence structure, consistent reading, and comprehension."
"The student worked with the opposites puzzle and then wrote out five sets of the cards using the whiteboard. His penmanship is improving a lot. I took a picture of the whiteboard and sent it to his mother before we erased the words. We also worked in the preschool language book, as well as both of the new K workbooks I brought. We also read the M Sound Box book."
"Today the student read simple rhyming sentences to work on sight word recognition and sounding out of unfamiliar words. Then, we read sentences and matched them to the correct picture for comprehension. We read a short story to work on fluency as well. He then read a fluency passage and read 33 words in one minute correctly! We then worked on sight word bingo and played a game to review them."
"The student had a test and is not sure how she did on it, but we went over the study guide for the test. She was able to do many of the problems. For the most part, she understands the concepts though and it is not such a problem. This week, she only had a few problems and we were looking at ksp and kc. We went through several of these problems and she seemed to do better as we went along. We were also looking at the proton donor and proton acceptor. We are going to meet next week and she anticipates a lot of homework during spring break so we will meet during that time too."
"Today we did a quick review of basic numbers (using 3 digit addition) in French and then launched in to how to tell time in French using military time. This was quite difficult and challenging but the family was very dedicated and patient in their learning. We finished by learning the names for places and items around the house and labeled various pictures of homes using newly acquired vocabulary."
"We worked on the student's homework, which focused on words starting with "sh," "ch," "th," and "wh." We then did a dictation on different words and the student had to identify/write out the beginning sound. He formed sentences with difficult words. We also worked on identifying words with short e and short a sounds. Finally, he did some counting and simple addition in his workbook."
"We covered vowels and reviewed homophones. The student liked the coloring activity. We watched a magic trick on homophones and did a color-by-number cat on long and short vowels. I also used my dry-erase board and she wrote notes in colored pencil. I didn't leave any extra practice. I am seeing progress. I have no concerns."
"The student and I worked hard at reviewing concepts regarding fraction, particularly how to round fractions when adding and subtracting them. Additionally, we fully corrected a quiz that he recently took. Although there were some concepts to iron out, by the end of the session, he had a very clear understanding of the material. As always, it was a very productive session and I sincerely look forward to working with him more soon."
"Today the student and I reviewed Quadratic Functions, then he had notes on Logarithms and Exponential Functions. I was excited to work with him on a fresh concept. He grasped the concept quite well. I told him key points that he needed to keep in his brain at all times. For example anything to the 0 power is 1, y=x is the equation of the line that graph of an exponential function is reflected across and if an exponent is negative we must flip the coefficient to make that exponent positive. He was able to do about 7 practice problems alone and explain his process. I loved the confidence he showed in our session today."
"Yesterday we went over two of her online tests that were over multiplying fractions, exponents, positive/negative numbers, and other topics that the student is really strong in. Overall she did very well. We talked to her teacher and scheduled her two DBAs for Tuesday at 3:15 and 4:30."
"Helped the student prepare for her social studies test, created flashcard questions. Focused on independent reading the last part of the session and read 11 pages. Student is able to grasp vocabulary words in increasingly complex manners."
