Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I studied for her Spanish test on Thursday. The test is on if clauses. She did a great job in our practice session and could remember all the types of clauses that appear in Spanish and what tenses need to be used. She got all of my practice questions correct as well. My advice is for her to take her time and think. She will do great!"
"We began our session by going over the student's difficulty with Spanish and what we could do to help. I gave her tips for memorizing vocabulary, including post-it labels and online flashcards to study with on her phone. For the remainder of the session we worked on verb conjugations, as she needed help with most of these. We differentiated between imperfect and preterite tenses and did a few exercises to help her understand. We discussed what we would be going over during our next session, now that we identified her strengths and the places where she needed the most assistance."
"We covered preterite and imperfect verb forms in more detail, and introduced formal and informal commands. We also spent some time addressing the proper way to use reflexive verbs, and breezed over the subjunctive verb tense, as this is helpful while learning formal commands. It's definitely rewarding to see the student progress (which is evident in his understanding of the material and through his scores on the practice quizzes I have given him), as this is now our third session and we have spend a fair amount of time covering this material in preparation for his exam. I left him with additional practice quizzes for commands, and suggested that he repeat several of the quizzes I have previously given him."
"Today, the student and I worked on imperfect past and direct object pronouns. She seems to have more confidence in the lessons. She got a 95% on a test that everyone else in her class failed! The teacher used her as an example. She seemed proud. She is beginning to have more confidence in speaking. She's also beginning to recognize the meaning of words from the videos we watch in the grammar tense that we studied that day."
"The student and I reviewed cooking and restaurant vocabulary. We began with a brainstorm to get an idea of how much vocabulary she was retaining, and then moved on to identifying various vocabulary items in pictures. Later, we moved into categorizing vocabulary, focusing specifically on items that would appear on a menu. She then used that vocabulary to create her own menu for an imaginary restaurant. We used that menu to role play ordering in a restaurant. We finished with some review translations. She seemed confident and relaxed; she had retained a lot of last week's vocabulary."
"We focused on new vocab for the student's vocab quiz this week. She had a good understanding of that. We moved onto enrichment activities involving the preterite. We also worked on new verbs given by her teacher."
