Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over solutions and molarity as well acid base reactions, titrations, and basic buffers and their properties."
"We studied mRNA transcription, elongation and processing. As well as DNA silencing and histone modification."
"We went over the student's questions about organic chemistry and started biochemistry. Organic chemistry requires a lot of memorization, so I advised him to go over the material extensively before the exam. Other than that, he is working diligently and is doing well on the practice tests."
"We spent some time on molecular bonding and geometry, tying together that day's lecture with the previous tutoring session. We then focused on stoichiometry problems."
"The student has a test tomorrow on muscular structures and the entire circulatory system. We went over tissues in the heart and developed strategies to memorize all sections of the heart. We also went over blood cells, plasma, serum, and the gaseous exchange in veins and arteries today. Overall, we focused on the fetal circulatory system and memorized the heart. She should do well tomorrow."
"Today, the student and I went over a study guide on the syntheses and reactions of alkynes. The reactions included catalytic hydrogenation, hydration, hydrohalogenation, dihalogenation, nucleophilic substitution, and ozonolysis. In terms of synthetic methods, we talked about halogenation and subsequent double dehydrohalogenation of alkenes. Today, we focused on how to look at organic syntheses and how to approach a particular synthesis, keeping in mind the various reactions available (e.g. lengthening carbon chains) as well as potential pitfalls that could be avoided (e.g. stereospecific reactions requiring a specific reagent to reduce an alkyne to an alkene, as well as regiospecific reactions like Markovnikov v. Anti-Markovnikov addition of water or HBr across a double bond)."
