Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Worked on standard derivative rules. Repeated application of product and chain rules. Nested composition. Took derivatives of very complicated explicit and implicit functions."
"We began our session by discussing how the student felt she was doing in the class, and whether or not she should take Calculus 2 next semester. I told her that I felt she was doing well, and that if she had any plans to take another semester of calculus, it would be easier to do it right after taking first semester calculus. We then discussed the material that she was working on in class this week. She told me that she was confused on the material, but as we began to work, she was able to answer most of the questions correctly without assistance from me. I told her that, if she started to approach the problems with more confidence, she would probably feel better about the material."
"The student and I worked on analyzing particle motion with functions involving displacement, velocity, and acceleration. We also discussed the differences between velocity and speed, as well as displacement and distance. The most difficult concept that he struggled with was how to use the information about the acceleration to correctly identify the changes in the behavior of the displacement and velocity."
"Today, the student and I worked on the next two chapters in her book involving different derivative taking techniques. First, we discussed the power rule and worked through a few textbook examples. Then, we explored the quotient and product rules and worked on a set of more challenging problems. We then planned that she will make a set of flashcards for these different rules (as well as the other ones in the chapter) and review them until her next exam. She will also begin working on her assigned homework problems and bring the ones that she struggles with to one of our next sessions. Tomorrow, she will print off her next study guide, and we will begin that as well as the next derivative rule. She did a fantastic job today. She is really working hard and grasping derivatives very quickly, which is awesome."
"In preparation for his test today, the student and I reviewed material focusing largely on trigonometry, limits, inverse functions, systems of functions, and logarithms. We spent most of the time working through the process of solving challenging trig problems by using complicated algebra over numerous steps, and he seemed more than comfortable with this material by the end of the session. I think he will do well on the test if he is able to recognize and complete all of the algebra work during the time provided. I hope to go over some of the fundamental theorems that lead into calculus during our next session to ensure that he will feel more than comfortable moving on to the upcoming calculus focused material."
"The student had a test in his upcoming class, so we spent our time going over his review packet of important problems, covering topics of discontinuity, function symmetry, and limits. By the end of our session, he was able to arrive at the correct answer and use the terminology required by his professor. He was also able to find solutions using his graphing calculator. Overall, he did quite well with the majority of the material."
