Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session with the student focused on preparing him for his upcoming exams in the quadratic formula and gene-studies in biology. We focused on a structure for approaching quadratic formula problems so that correct signs are maintained throughout the problem."
"We discussed the student's goals for the tutoring sessions and established her competency in the two subjects she is concerned about- Spanish and Geometry. After evaluating her knowledge base, we spent the remainder of the session reviewing the topics she is currently studying in Spanish and addressing additional problems."
"The student brought in five solid pages of draft material, and we went line by line, paragraph by paragraph, polishing for sentence-flow and pushing on the strength or weakness of certain arguments. We talked a lot about close reading, how to contextualize quotations, and when deep analysis is needed as opposed to a piece of evidence that "stands on its own." We also talked about conclusion paragraphs, which he hadn't yet written: what they should do, all the different ways they can be done, and what would make most sense for the sort of paper he needed to hand in on Thursday."
"Today we worked on establishing an outline for the marketing opinion essay. We discussed topics, chose one, and set the outline based on the grading criteria. In addition we worked on clarifying answers required for the discussion questions."
"The student has a really good grasp on the assessment material. We went over a couple of problems she still had with the math, and reviewed concepts she felt comfortable with to make sure they were concrete. I gave her some additional advice on the reading and English sections that I feel is important to know. She feels quite prepared and I think she'll do really well!"
"Geometry: started a new topic on properties of triangles and line segments (midpoints, types of triangles, congruent angles/sides, number line, bisectors, base angles, vertex). Went through the homework and reviewed factoring."
"We watched lectures on the upcoming topics for the week, including ratios, proportions, and geometric means. The student seemed to have a good understanding of the material, which required a lot of algebra that she had already mastered. And since there are not as many proofs or constructions in this chapter, she feels much more confident about this chapter for the final."
"Today we covered topics on 2nd fundamental theorem of Calculus, average value theorem, mean value theorem, and substitution technique. We had several practice problems demonstrating these topics. He was able to complete the problems while I was guiding him."
"The student and I worked through a practice SAT, covering one reading section, one math section, and two writing sections. In writing, we became more familiar with rules that appear again and again such as parallelism and subject-verb agreement. In reading, we worked on some strategies for elimination in sentence completions. In math, we worked on how to translate word problems into more easily-solvable algebra."
"Reviewed physics topics from the textbook. Topics included waves (sound, string, Doppler Effect, harmonics) and gravitational forces in space. Also reviewed kinetic and potential energy, specifically in cases where the object already has some kinetic energy (missile dropped from plane in flight)."
"Today the student reviewed his last three labs involving photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and mitosis. We covered the methods of each lab and what the data he obtained means for each lab. He learned to interpret the results of his labs and how they connect to the concepts he learned in class. Lastly, we spent a fair amount of time learning about common mistakes students make when learning about cellular division."
"The student finished his summer reading book and answered some study questions to prepare for the assignment on the first day of school. He also worked on grammar phrases worksheet and sentence correction worksheets. He did a great job today!"
