Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Practiced/discussed strategies for Writing section questions. Went over topics for Math that the student needed to review (logs, matrices, etc.). Discussed essay strategies and examples."
"The student and I studied bell curves, means, standard deviations, and z scores for her math midterm on Thursday."
"This was our first meeting, so we spent a few minutes getting to know one another. I asked him about hobbies, school, college, and then about testing. He's taken two ACT practice tests, and his weak points seem to be in the Reading passages. Mostly with timing, but also inference and other question types. I looked at an analysis of his last practice test, and I will prepare our next session accordingly. --We began with the English section, working through the rules of grammar, and covered: Basic sentence structure, fragments, run-ones, misplaced modifiers, parallel construction, sub-verb agreement, tricky subjects, verb tenses, and gerunds. He is strong in grammar (only 4 errors on the practice test), but if he can fine-tune it, he can gain points which will help his composite score. --We moved on to Reading passages. The Humanities passage seems to be most difficult, so we discussed saving that passage for last at test time, so if he does run out of time, it will be on the section on which he makes the most mistakes. We covered 5 or six passages, discussing strategies as we went. I timed his readings and taught him how best to actively read, annotating as he goes. After reading, he should write one sentence stating main idea and tone, if applicable. --We looked at his practice test and went over some errors. We will revisit it next session. --For homework, I assigned 3 reading passages from the 2nd practice test in the back of his SAT book."
